Obviously the author did not consider that Cain resolved any overpopulation issues in a proactive fashion.
Without that bit of foresight there would be twice as many people on the globe. Nature has a way of limiting the population of all species to available regional resources. As humans we overcame the regional issue but are still limited by global resources.

True, according to Genesis they had a third son Seth, as well as ‘many sons and daughters’ as Adam lived until the ripe old age of 930 (must have had a killer 401k).
