  1. Ivan says:

    SWELTERING IN NEW YORK.
New York, 30th June.—Old Sol and old Mortality strode hand in hand through the streets of New York to-day, the hottest June day on record. Sixteen deaths were officially reported and scores were prostrated. The health authorities declare it is fearful to contemplate what might have happened had not that day been one of rest. On Saturday, with the thermometer at 94 deg., fourteen deaths occurred and 200 horses perished in the streets. On Sunday the thermometer climbed to 98 deg. a few minutes after 4 p.m. Nineteen deaths were recorded and twenty prostrations.”
