Ice Area Sets Another Record High

Day 258 ice area in Antarctica is the highest ever for the date, and the fifth highest daily value on record.

Antarctic ice area is more than one million km^2 larger than the highest value ever recorded in the Arctic. By definition, excess ice has more impact on the climate than missing ice, because it occurs at lower latitudes where the sun is less oblique. There is no sun at the North Pole now, but lots of sun shining on the excess Antarctic ice at 70S.

Alarmists are not talking about this, because their religion forbids them from discussing the truth.

That the AGW crowd ignores this is totally expected.
From a purely scientific viewpoint, are there any other serious theories that explain both the record low extent in the north and record high in the south?
If it is a cycle of some kind, it is a long one, as attempts to cross the NW passage since the 19th century have either failed, or took multiple summers, as the St. Roch did in 1940-42. Nowadays dozens of ships, including sailboats, cross the passage every summer, and some of the crews say they did not see even a cube of ice.

Not so fast. You must not be a Canadian eh? Taking the more northerly channel on the return trip to Vancouver from Halifax, they did it in 86 days in 1944. The captain and crew were awarded the Polar Medal by King George VI.

The greater amount of sea ice in Antartica wil prevent the southern ocean from heating up until the ice has melted, it is not surprising that the southern ocean is getting cooler then.

What are you trying to say donald ? Until the ice has melted ? The ice extent is growing and nearing apparently record proportions . I have recently read here on Steven’s blog where Joe B and Eric W have predicted that in the foreseable future we would see the arctic cooling again and the ice recovering and that the theory is that then possibly the ice extent in Antarctica would diminish , but at the present time there is no significant melting occuring in Antarctica and indeed one would not expect there to be with the temperatures being what they are . Possibly I misinterpret your meaning but with the warmists saying that the ice is melting away by melting under water I see where your statement could be interpereted as the underwater melting is cooling the southern oceans and until the ice is melted the southern ocean would cool. When in fact the southern ice extent is growing .

I am just trying to say that the sun cannot warm the ocean until the sea ice melts which it does every year to a great extent because of the distance it is from the south pole,I assume that the more ice there is at the maximum extent then it will be reflected throughout the Antarctic melt season and perhaps at the minimum sea ice extent. This would be the opposite of what is supposed to be happening in the Arctic where sea ice is melting more than it has in the past and allowing the Arctic ocean to warm up.I was not saying anything about the long term trend in the Arctic or the Antarctic ,Why sea ice is increasing in the Antarctic but declining in the Arctic ,I don;t have the answer to why that is happening.

  5. Ben says:

In the Arctic we hear how fragile and ‘rotten’ first year ice is, and yet out of the same mouths is heard, “Multiple ice breakers plowing through first year ‘rotten’ ice have no effect whatsoever on ice sheet stability”.

Because it refreezes, while its melting…

  6. HL Mencken says:

As many an erstwhile Arctic explorer has discovered, during the re-freeze
the ice that parts in front of the bow quickly refreezes astern. Either keep
the ship moving or be frozen in until spring.

    Steve,
You must be a witch to be able to continuously show the shambles that alarmist “science” has become.
The climate religion acolytes will want to weigh you to see if you weigh less than a duck (see Monty Python’s Holy Grail). Watch out for anybody saying their from Jenny Craig with bathroom scales following you around or dodgy looking road transport officers wanting to put you and your bike over a weighbridge.
