That is why 10 to 15 minutes of warning may not sound like much, but makes a HUGE difference in death tolls. “Hey, there will be a tornado hitting your area in the next 10-15 minutes” means you can get into a safer position before it hits. Up until the last 20 years or so tornado warning was “What’s THAT noise?” And tornado prone areas are MUCH more populated now than 90-100 years ago.
The system didn’t work today.
I disagree. I’ve seen numerous people on the news stations saying they left home or went to a neighbors storm shelter before the storm hit/after the warnings came out. Imagine the death toll at the schools if the warnings hadn’t reached them? There would have been thousands of deaths if there hadn’t been that warning period and the sirens.
Hallways are not tornado shelters, the school was negligent.
From the 1930’s through the 1960’s radio (AM) was a big saver of life. From county to county and state to state, the meteorological society kept people informed, especially since CNN wasn’t around and many weren’t playing video games or listening to IPODS:)
Read the last sentence in that 1890 report: “The coming of the tornado was officially predicted, but the populace were incredulous and took no notice.”
