Republicans need to do two things :
- Run an advertising campaign showing Obama promising to make energy prices skyrocket and bankrupt the coal industry, over and over again. That will make his credibility plummet after today’s speech.
- Pass legislation making it illegal to shut down a power plant, unless it poses an immediate threat to safety or there is 100% replacement power coming on line. Democrats won’t be able to vote against that without paying a very high price.

They don’t need to pass legislation. If something is done by executive order, the House can undo it by themselves if they vote within 90 days.

Why wasn’t Mitt Romney’s campaign smart to do this?
IIRC, the Romney camp was concerned about the race card being played if they attacked Obama personally i.e. his credentials, competence, fitness to lead, etc. or just used his worst words against him. (I think there even may have been some telegraphy going on from the Democrats to that effect, but I don’t remember for certain.) So they adopted from the start a policy of only questioning his policies and in a non-angry tone of voice. (Not saying I agree with that 100%, but that’s what they did.) Limbaugh was extremely critical of this policy, and tried to “fill in the gaps,” so to speak, for Romney’s omission of personal attacks, ridicule, and any display of dissatisfaction with Obama himself. Meanwhile, what was Obama doing? Naturally, he was following the Limbaugh Theorem, and campaigning against his own policies. Of course, to call him out on it would be to call him a liar, which would violate the don’t-get-personal rule.

The answer is as simple as it is difficult to put into action.
1. If you don’t have it, they can’t steal it.
2. If you don’t earn it, they can’t tax it.
3. If you aren’t there, they can’t enslave you.
4. You don’t have to do anything but survive.
Bottom line: Stop feeding them. They couldn’t survive six months depending upon themselves for their existence. It would be an ugly six months but after that, the way is clear to build a rational life and keep it rational.

Could be that Obama is just paying lip service to his supporters and actually will not actually try to seriously enforce any of this BS. Even if Obama is a true believer, his advisors are smart enough to know that any such action would destroy the weak recovery and lead to fuel stortages. That would be political suicide. I suspect this is mostly bark without much bite.
What works is dependent upon your goals. What you say would be true if their goal was to live. It isn’t. They resent the responsibility for being human and are intent on destroying all who embrace that responsibility and all that embrace has achieved even if it costs them their own lives.
