The Murray River (Australia’s longest) was dry for six months in 1902.
From 1896 to 1902, the worst drought in Australia’s history is believed to have killed half of the sheep population. It was also a period of both record heat and cold. April, 1902 was the driest month of the twentieth century.
This drought followed on the heels of extremely heavy rainfall in the late 1880s and early 1990s, proving once again that the climate was very comfortable and stable when CO2 was below 350 ppm.

We need to spend trillions of dollars so we can pretend to be trying to make the climate just like some people imagine it used to be.
Eheheh…the NYT has been reporting about Australian droughts since 1855, and there was even a great irrigation conference in Melbourne in 1890…
When these stories come up it seems like I am repeating my self. Climate is the extent of long term weather events and not an average. Climate represents regional historical weather and provides an idea of what might be expected in that region.
I knew more about the climate in southern Nevada than those that were on the local flood control board because I lived there and experienced it. They studied the National weather service and Army Core of Engineers reports that gave averages. They could spout numbers and show the flood regions as described by the ACOE but I could look at a map and show them where the next flood would be depending on where rain fell the heaviest.
To learn about climate where I live now I talk to those who grew up and farmed the region and we talk about what they learned from their folks about weather conditions. CDC, NWS gives averages along with record high /low. That is about useless when growing a garden. A neighbor telling me to plant certain crops at certain times works better because they know and that knowledge meant the difference between having food on the table and starving.

It was also a period of between sunspot cycles and the middle of four rather mild cycles.
As Sir Richard Gregory proved 30 years later, Lake Victoria’s lake levels matched sunspot activity.
I tend to believe it was colder, but the global warming period for the 1800s ended around 1878 with last strong sunspot cycle for that century.

The BoM has chosen to ignore this period of Australia’s recorded weather history. The “High Quality” starts at 1910, as they do not know whether Stevenson Screens were used by Australian weather stations between 1881 and 1909. The Stevenson Screens were installed at the main centres prior to 1881 and so stations which had rainfall only to this time reported temperature data with the new units. This early data is probably too embarrasing for AGW folk as many have temperatures of the same order as the last 30 – 40 years. See Warwick Hughes item:

Ignoring or hiding data is in the same class as producing “High Quality” data which differs from he raw data. No body has to justify their actions in this climate saga.
We might be heading into this again in about 7 years, I have been measuring a lake that tends to break onto three parts if sunspot activity is too low. There is about 84 inches to go.

Temperature records at Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology began after 1910. Even though accurate records exist back through the 1800’s.
The blistering temperatures of the 1890’s, that led to the “Federation Drought”, clearly didn’t fit the current global warming narrative, so they were simply deleted.
Confirmation bias of a pathological kind.
