DISPLAYING FIRST PARAGRAPH – ROME, Oct. 7 — The earth, with few regional exceptions, is undergoing “a persistent cold wave” that began in the Nineteen Forties, a United States weather man told a symposium on climate this week.

  1. Andy Weiss says:

The 1960-61 winter was severe in the eastern US; the 1958-59 winter was almost snowless in many of the major cities. It’s always easy to go along with people’s perceptions.

Lets not get carried away now. Individual articles about certain events are not really strong evidence. Especially regarding the polar warming which is clearly greater now than at any point since at least 1880.

Early periods were warm yes, but not like today.

  3. Andy Weiss says:

Mild winter weather in Greenland is strongly correlated with cold, snowy weather in much of the US and Europe

  4. Paul H says:

Perhaps you had better tell GISS they got it wrong.

    Clearscience:
That was probably due to a satellite glitch in the 1800s that recorded the temperatures as lower. Maybe it was an extrapolation from the Sahara desert by teleconnection!

    • The late 1800’s was the tail end of the Little Ice Age. The slight warming in the earth since then is from the earth emerging from the Little Ice Age—-that includes the slight warming at the North Pole.

clearscience didn’t supply the data source, but does mention Tamino, so I suspect the data is from James Hansen the radical environmental activist.

“Antarctica hasn’t warmed at all, and Greenland is cooler than it was in the 1930s.

[You might have to tell Steig et al. 2009 that.]

“The current Greenland warming, while not yet quite matching the temperatures of 70 years ago…” ”

[Although I respect Dr. Meier and his work, the Arctic Report Card has come out and seems to have indicated that Greenland is in fact as warm if not warmer than it was then.]

The datasource is GHCN v2 adjusted. Grid cell combination is using a linear based approach. Data was selected for Latitudes greater than 66 N and less than 90 N.

“It’s very telling when someone will only use GISS data.”

[The arctic data isn’t GISS and there’s nothing wrong with GISS in the first place. Its results have been verified numerous times, clear climate code has validated the code, and it is the only record which is entirely global when including polar interpolation.]

I would call it far more “telling” when a group of individuals (not saying any names) refuse to use any data other than CRU despite having been shown that CRU underpredicts the actual warming.

i would not call that measuring the temperature

if you pick actual places in greenland and look at undadjusted temperatures i gaurantee you will find cooling

like maybe this for long trends anyway

maybe this will help you understand our skepticism

steven has posted numerous data graphs demonstrating the exaggeration of greenland “warming”

  6. Mike Davis says:

It seems the New York Times has kept up with the scientific consensus for a few years.
