Scotland almost as cold as South Pole as mercury hits minus 22 – and thieves nick two-ton grit bin

SCOTLAND suffered its coldest day of the big freeze so far as temperatures plunged almost as low as the South Pole today.
The mercury plummeted to minus 22.3C at Altnaharra in Sutherland this morning – close to the minus 22.9C currently at the southernmost part of the globe.
