NYT : CO2 Is Going To Kill Most Of The Life On Earth

Fossil fuel emissions, they say, are like a runaway train, hurtling the world’s citizens toward a stone wall — a carbon dioxide level that, over time, will cause profound changes.

The risks include melting ice sheets, rising seas, more droughts and heat waves, more flash floods, worse storms, extinction of many plants and animals, depletion of sea life and — perhaps most important — difficulty in producing an adequate supply of food. Many of these changes are taking place at a modest level already, the scientists say, but are expected to intensify.

  1. Dave N says:

Strange.. they made no mention of bitter cold and snow amongst the risks, which are supposedly consistent with rising CO2.

    • SteveA says:

Dave – Bitter cold and snow were implied (didn’t you know that) as all current weather events are precursors to the end of the world.

  2. Erik says:

“But as action began to seem more likely, the political debate intensified, with fossil-fuel industries mobilizing to fight emission-curbing measures”

“Climate-change contrarians increased their attack on the science, taking advantage of the Internet to distribute their views outside the usual scientific channels.”

Freedom of speech and the internet – gotta hate it, its UN’s next target, and they are allready at it – this is a fight for freedom – this is the biggest fight ever, and most of the worlds populations don’t even notice

“I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!”

“I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!”

  3. Andy Weiss says:

They are still trying to use their usual scare tactics to get their funding. There is no “runaway train”. How many times can you call “wolf” and get away with it?

    • SteveA says:

Let’s see, I believe it was Abe Lincoln who said, “You can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.” For all of his wisdom, though, he could not have conceived of the present-day twist on the axiom. That being, “Just keep them fooled long enough to stoke to old 401k. Then retire in style and laugh a the fools.”

  4. Sandy Rham says:

And “Jurassic Park” was just pre-emptive propaganda by Big Oil?

  5. MikeTheDenier says:

I’m sure the warming freak will latch onto this as proof they are right…

Bastardi also warned of a drought that will in cause higher commodity prices.

“I think the southern plains of the United States are starting evolve a drought now,” Bastardi said. “This dryness that you’re seeing in Texas I think will evolve into spring and summer time and Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas into the lower Mississippi valley looked to me to be very dry this upcoming summer and nothing like crazy weather. It is the pattern and what the pattern dictates.”

  6. John Silver says:

“scientists say” used to be the standard communist propaganda phrase.
    Still is.

  7. Justa Joe says:

Seems like the word has gone out to the warmist propaganda mill to redouble their efforts to see them through this cold spell.

  8. Latitude says:

People are still waiting on the train to leave the station………

  9. pwl says:

CO2 is an essential plant nutrient in The Cycle of Carbon Based Life On Earth!

“Without stronger action to limit emissions, the number could pass 560 before the end of the century, double what it was before the Industrial Revolution.”

560 ppm of CO2 is well below the ~900 ppm to ~1,400 ppm CO2 that is used in commercial greenhouses to grow food faster and bigger! So in fact we’ve got lots of head room there! It’s been as high as ~7,000 ppm in the past. I wonder if there is even enough CO2 in hydrocarbon fuels for us to pump it up that high again?

“Nature doesn’t care how hard we tried,” Jeffrey D. Sachs, the Columbia University economist, said at a recent seminar. “Nature cares how high the parts per million mount. This is running away.”

Nonsense. Please provide the evidence Mr. Sachs, conjectural fears of doomsday are not sufficient.

  10. Dr. Killpatient says:

“The risks include melting ice sheets, rising seas, more droughts and heat waves, more flash floods, worse storms, extinction of many plants and animals, depletion of sea life and — perhaps most important — difficulty in producing an adequate supply of food.”

They forgot to mention cats and dogs living together. That’s when you know the shit has really hit the fan.

  11. C Monster says:

All is not lost. Despite all the propaganda strewn in our schools.

You may have noticed this in your stats too, Steve. It made me smile…

  12. Skeptic says:

If something happens it’s because of global warming. If nothing happens it’s because of global warming. If global warming doesn’t happen it’s because of global warming

  13. Hal says:

While most of the readers at Real Science appear to live in Reality, the New York Times once again solidifies its standing as the ‘Paper-of-Record’ in the Bizarro World.

  14. Bornfree56 says:

Its never going to stop, the lying that is. There brain washing our kids in gov, schools and we as the older generation better find ways to stop this communist BS coz we dont have much longer to correct the big wrong Obama has already done to this country. He is a wanta be dick-t8-er, marxist, facist, socialist pos I hope he bits the bul lit!!!!!!!!!

  15. Arthur Davis says:

Why does this continue to be questioned, doubted and debated? The only thing more overwhelming than the science that supports these conclusions is the ignorance that continues to deny them.

    • Mike Davis says:

What science supports what? Science is about questioning, doubting, and debating. The only denial I am aware of is those who deny natural weather patterns are the leading cause of the weather we have experienced since 1900 and thousands of years earlier! Are you admitting you are ignorant enough to deny the major influence over weather.

  16. Apparently between the time I started and finished writing the below , NYT stopped accepting comments . So , here’s what I wrote :

My “favorite” quote from Lenin is : “We must be ready to employ trickery, deceit, law-breaking, withholding and concealing truth. We can and must write in a language which sows among the masses hate, revulsion, scorn, and the like, towards those who disagree with us.” ( Max Eastman : Reflections on the Failure of Socialism , 1955 )

It’s why “eco-leninist” is an appropriate label for this nonscience attack on human freedom and welfare . Complete with Lenin’s “useful idiots” .

I have yet to see the handful of equations which would demonstrate these “climate scientists” even know how to compute the temperature of a radiantly heated colored ball . That’s what the issue gets down to . We are perhaps 10 centigrade , or 3% warmer than a gray ball in our orbit . That’s due to our color ( spectrum ) being a little biased towards that of the sun . Assign a spectrum to earth , and you can calculate its mean temperature . For any temperature the eco-leninists assert , we should demand to see the spectrum which they claim produces it .

The spectrum of CO2 is not only heavily masked by that of H2O , but rather saturated at levels too low to support life . ( Remember , organic life is built from CO2 combined with H2O and a little bit of ash by sunlight. )

This article actually demonstrates what little effect the defining building block of life has on our temperature . It is claimed that CO2 has increased from about 280 to 390 molecules per million air molecules since we started restoring carbon from previous lush epochs to our atmosphere . That’s an increase of about 36% . The total increase in our temperature has been perhaps 0.6 to 0.8 degrees centigrade . Lets call it one whole degree and assume CO2 is the total cause . Thus , in terms of true Kelvin temperature , we have warmed from about 287k to 288k , or about 0.35% . Another 35% increase in CO2 , will square the 1.0035 getting us up about another 1c . Doubling CO2 from a presumed pre-industrial 280ppm will get us , most generously , another 1.3c .

Far from frightening . Particularly when weighed against very significant increases in agricultural yields to be expected in every corner of the planet .

For multiple mathematical reasons , the notion that , at 288k , we happen to be right at the edge of some catastrophic “tipping point” in our spectrum ( since it is our spectrum which determines our temperature ) is nuts . Consider that the entire effect of our coloring ( including infrared ) , from our white poles to our blue oceans to our green forests , and our blue sky only makes us 3% warmer than a flat gray .

In summary , the level of understanding of the most basic classical physics displayed by these putative scientists is so pathetic it can only be labeled “junk” . It shows a major failing of this purportedly quantitative academic community . To propose crippling the world’s economy , and pricing energy totally beyond the means of the poor , on the basis of this junk is nothing less than criminal .
