Trenberth’s Missing Heat Found

It never existed.

The trouble is that this energy was not showing up in any measurements which led to Trenberth’s well publicised “travesty” comment in an email published as a result of the “Climategate” leaks which stated: “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t”.

Knox and Douglass analysed Argo float temperature data for the period from 2003 to 2008 to estimate changes in ocean heat content (OHC). They state that “Our four estimates of the recent OHC trend for 2003–2008 adequately consider interannual variability and we find that the trend is negative”. That is that the ocean heat content has been falling and not increasing.

It is clear from their paper that Knox and Douglass believe that there is no missing energy and that the problem of missing energy is an artifact caused by a “serious overestimate” by Trenberth and Fasullo of the radiation imbalance at the top of the Earth’s atmosphere. Essentially, they are saying that there is no positive radiation imbalance and therefore no need to assume that a store of energy is being built up in the oceans – with the clear implication, although not explicitly stated in their paper, that the Earth may not be not warming.

All of the heat is hiding under one rock in the Caribbean……………

    hunh?

Shocking. You mean the energy budget cartoon that the IPCC uses has errors? WOW. Whoda thunk it?

Maybe that explains why my house hasn’t gotten much warmer even though I increased CO2 to 400ppm. Really thought those magical molecules were just going to keep reradiating heat, keeping me toasty warm and my energy bills lower. Damn it.

    YEAR OF BRRR

2010 was Australia’s coolest year since 2001. But the “warming of Australia’s climate continues”, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Being somewhat slow witted I cannot understand how a less dense warmer pocket of water can be in the deep ocean. Being less dense it should rise and being warmer over time at the margin it would constantly go to equalibrium (cool down). Trenberth’s hiding heat seems fanciful.

Seriously though, has he checked down the back of the sofa. It’s amazing what I find in mine.

The real irony is that the global warming theory will be hung by the warmist own rope. The Argo Buoy network was conceived by Jim Hanson so he would have irrefutable proof of global warming by showing that the oceans heat content, the earth’s calorimeter for surface heat, was steadily rising. If the ocean heat content refuses to increase over the next 5 to 10 years, just as it has over the last 7 years, the Argo network will have provided irrefutable proof that the theory does not stand up to the data.

  9. Colin Henderson says:

Global warming results in increased evaporation. Over land that evaporation results in drought (at the point of evaporation) and flooding/snow at the point of condensation. Over water, warming results in heat loss from evaporation ergo global cooling. Its all so easy believe 😉

    • The record cold La Nina is causing increased evaporation. I get it.

    • BioBob says:

Fine theory, Colin. If it was all so easy, all those weather forecasters could just press the Easy Button and never be wrong. How is that working out for them?

But wait – there is more – over water cooling results in heat gain from precipitation ergo global warming ? Yeh – that’s the ticket ! uht oht – a butterfly wing beat – we are screwed !!!
