1934 : The Big Lie

1934 was (by far) the hottest year in US history, until USHCN and Hansen adjusted it downwards 10 years ago.

But the other half of the big lie is the claim that the heat and drought was a US-only event. Reader Ivan dug up a bunch of historical references showing that it was indeed a worldwide event.

  1. Andy Weiss says:

July 1936 wasn’t too shabby either, even hotter that July 1934 in many US cities.

  2. Ivan says:

Was 1998 this hot, I wonder?
“HEAT WAVE – WHOLE WORLD AFFECTED
A blasting beat wave with the temperature around 100 swept the Western Canadian prairies again to-day, extending from Edmonton to Regina, and then southward through the Dakotas to Nebraska, roughly comprising a third of the territory of the United States and Canada.”

  3. Ivan says:

..oops .. missed India before. Sorry.
“HEAT WAVE. Heavy Mortality in India
    MERCURY AT 120 IN SHADE.
The heat was so severe at Ellore Town, that cocoanuts, usually impervious to the heat, cracked.”

  4. Ivan says:

    ..even Antartica..
“HEAT WAVE. Explorers Puzzled But Pleased.
LITTLE AMERICA, June 5— This little polar community— Rear-Admiral Byrd’s American expedition to the antarctic — has entered on the 14th day of what for want of a better description, might be called ‘the hottest winter heat wave in the memory of the oldest inhabitants.'”

  5. Sandy Rham says:

Altering historical data with which you’ve been entrusted is more than a lie.
It is blatant fraud and breach of trust.
I really hope you keep shouting this from the rooftops, especially since it’s so global.

  6. Ivan says:

    ..and the Red Sea..
“SUSSEX IN HEAT WAVE. HOT WEATHER IN RED SEA.”

  7. Baa Humbug says:

Because of the uncertainties in the current temp series, I doubt very much that the past decade was any warmer than the 30’s.
This has been one giant fraud perpetuated on the western world.

  8. Blade says:

    Great work guys. Mega-Bookmark.

  9. Andy Weiss says:

But in 1934, we relied on crude Stone Age devices called the thermometer to measure the temperature. We did not have the wonderful precise satellite data that we have today. Nor did we have the kind of climate experts in 1934 that were properly trained to adjust and throw out unwanted data.
