Alarmist IQ Goes Negative : “Global Warming Causes Tsunamis”

A cockroach is smarter than these people. Tree Hugger author apparently believes that disappearing glacial ice in the ocean over the Japan Subduction Zone caused the earthquake.

  1. Dr. Killpatient says:

No doubt this event will stoke the fire of the general public’s imagination and get the AGW train-wreck back on track right-bloody quick.

  2. Ralph says:

Pseudoscience goes to a whole other level.

  3. HopeyChangey says:

I’m waiting for the televised interview with Santa and Rudolph on Arctic conditions before I make my final decision on this.

  6. Philip Finck says:

    Oh great,

Now we will see climate change earthquake tsunamis movies all over the place.

I love it (not the tsunami), but the publicity that Brian Merchant creates with such bizarre claims. Even people who are moderate supporters are looking at these claims and shaking their heads. The result is that the Brian Merchants of the world are discrediting the AGW scientists, even some of the science that is probably good. By that I mean some of the data (a little), but not the interpretation.

Merchant also appears opportunistic and unsympathetic to the many people who died and/or lost loved ones. He is earning no support and is doing severe damage to his cause – belief.

His type of narrative also puts the AGW scientists in a bad spot. If they say nothing to refute the bizarre claims, then they are guilty by their silence and by association.

I think that is a good point to stress in this debate …… the guilt by association and silence. It is a tool that the AGW crowd attempt to use all the time. You can see this with respect to Judith Curry.

  7. Andy Weiss says:

The only solution is to rid the world of most the evil human race. Since straight, white males are by far the most evil, they should be the first to go.

  9. Baa Humbug says:

What surprised me initially is that there are a few commentors on that blog who support that viewpoint, then I came to my senses.

  10. Robert of Ottawa says:

THese claims of global warming causing this disaster, or Gaia punishing us for global warming, must be widely distributed as they reveal the absurdity of this irrationalist movement.

  11. Tony Duncan says:

The below is pretty much my take on the question

As for any claims that the earthquake somehow relates to climate change, McNamara (Dr. Daniel McNamara, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey) didn’t hesitate to dismiss that connection. He explained that while evidence shows melting glaciers can cause small tremors directly underneath as their weight on the Earth’s crust reduces, what happened in Japan “is not connected in any way to that process.”

  12. BMF says:

Frankly, the only surprise so far is that the MSM hasn’t yet claimed that AGW is causing the fuel rod in Japan’s nuclear plants to melt.

And if I’m not mistaken, the current climate change theory tells us that the melting fuel rods are currently causing equally extreme cold in some other part of the world. Did I get that right? Anyone? Anyone… Bueller?

  13. Mike Bromley says:

I decided to enter into the Grist website “debate” on this topic, only to be subjected to a full-frontal assault on my person, my level of education, and most anything at all, especially if it reflected my area of expertise…an assault led mostly by one person, who, for purposes of sanity, will not be mentioned here. Suffice it to say that a visit to that forum and a read of one page will reveal the perpetrator(s) to be exactly what bandwagon-concensus armchair scientists should be: Ignorant, and proud of it.

  14. WB Tripp says:

I’m just curious here, but I thought water expanded when it freezes, which makes the same mass take up more space, essentially making it lighter (which is why ice floats). Shouldn’t melting glaciers increase the weight on the crust not lighten it?

  15. Colin Henderson says:

Hey skeptics, obviously global warming causes tsunamis. Scientists know that warming causes increased release of CO2 from the oceans. That release of CO2 reduces the weight of sea water which makes it rise, turning tidal highs into tsunamis ………. duh.

  16. edzhead says:

We all learned about plate tectonics back in grammar school. At least they did in the 60’s and 70’s. That’s was why California was so earthquake prone and was eventually going to fall into the sea. Haven’t these people ever heard of the San Andrea’s fault? I’d like to know how anything man’s done can effect shifts in the earths crust. Hopefully kids are still learning at least some real science in school and not just being indoctrinated into the AGW fan club…sigh

  17. Mike Bromley says:

Unfortunately, the latter, edzhead. As for Cauliflowernia falling into the sea, fortunately, that was an urban myth. Strike-slip faults move sideways, not up and down. I noticed there seems to be a meek and embarrassed retreat from the Tswarmnami idea.

  18. edzhead says:

The falling into the sea was simply an homage to Lex Luthor…but thanks for the clarification…yow

  19. Anderlan says:

So, you’re saying that fast glacial accretion or loss, hundreds of gigatons per year fast, has no seismic effect?

It’s anyone’s guess as to whether this effect is something to worry about, though. We’ve got more to worry about from decreased crop yields due to higher average temps and drought, and property damage due to floods (land tsunamis?) from a warmer, more moist, and GENERALLY more dynamic atmosphere.

Weather: 1000-year heat wave decimating crop yields, with recovery the next years.
Climate: The same, recurring every decade.

The difference between weather and climate is the difference between being able to get back up after you’ve been knocked down and staying knocked down.

  20. Anderlan says:

Remember the supposed plot about Chinese school children jumping off of their chairs in unison to cause an earthquake? Haha, like that or anything we do could effect tectonics!

I mean, let’s take the weight of all the Chinese schoolchildren, say, 300 million times, say, 55lbs. We get 7.5 MegaTons (metric). Nothing to a tectonic plate.

What the scientists are saying is just as silly! Silly scientists, saying 233 GigaTons are melting off Greenland every year, as documented by satellites. That’s like only 31,000 times the Chinese schoolchildren yarn!

But that doesn’t take into account that in the Chinese schoolchildren legend, the weight is shifted all at once. Greenland is losing that ice over an entire year, not in an instant! If we divide that 233GigaTons per year down to per second, we only get 7,383 kilograms per second.

That’s only about 295 kids jumping off chairs per second. Every second, all day, all year, every year. Silly worrying scientists.
