The melting Mexican glacier global warming story has been wildly popular this year. It has all the makings of a first rate climate change story, because it has almost no truth to it.
- The glaciers have been melting for more than 15,000 years.
- They were tiny 120 years ago
- The fact that they are melting tells us nothing about the temperature trend over the last 120 years.

Were they both taken around same time of year? Interesting how large snow cap is in color photo. Must be related to warmcold somehow!

These two photos are a rather poor substitute for quantitative measurements. Snow depth on the glacier was reported at 70 meters in 1999, 40 meters in 2004 and currently less than 10 meters. Photos are two dimensional, and are an excellent way to show that area of the glacier was very small. But nice straw man argument anyway.
What happened to the mile of ice in Chicago?
Sure, you have a great two dimensional view but which part of each picture is the glacier and which is the seasonal snow field? What time of year was each picture taken?
My point is that the glacier was small 120 years ago.
Small compared to what? You need to compare to the sizeof the glacier today, not the size of snow fields at a different season.
Iztaccihuatl is a mountain in the valley of mexico, and it is so high that in the winter it has more snow than in summer. we also have another mountain ( volcano) popcatepetl, that also has more snow in the winter than in the summer.. amazing no?
Two questions occur to me.
Firstly if they are worried that the melting will wreck their irrigation and power, water supply, what do they think they are using now ?
Secondly , do people really think that ice cap type glaciers on smoking volcanoes in tropical areas are a permanent geological feature ?
