They Could Do This, Or They Could Do That, Or They Could Do Nothing At All

Gov. Jerry Brown declared the state’s drought over, but in the long term the availability of water locally is still going to pose a problem, according to a new government report.

A report released last week by the Interior Department said annual flows in three river basins – the Colorado, Rio Grande and San Joaquin – could decline by as much 8 percent to 14 percent over the next four decades.

The Colorado and San Joaquin rivers supply water to Southern California.

I’m sure their (seemingly endless) climate model circle jerk is very fulfilling, but they should be preparing for the floods which will be coming down the Colorado River in a few weeks.

Looks like they are doing a Queensland repeat.

  1. Daniel Packman says:

Do you understand the difference between typical flows in 40 years and a single season flood?

    • Lake Powell has risen 60 feet in the last six years, and will rise at least 50 more feet this year.

      I think he does:

One big flood causes massive devastation with little time for preparation. A 10% drop over 40 years leaves considerable time for preparation and doesn’t cause catastrophic damage.

There were places this river was going over paved trails with last year’s melt. Looks like it’ll be worse this year.

      • Daniel Packman says:

Two different events that each require different ways to prepare. A flash flood requires moving to high ground and then possibly rebuilding afterwards. Loss of primary flow in a river requires finding alternative sources of water or being able to use less. Even over years the latter might be harder to do.

Dan, the question I have is, what part of this do you not understand?

Regardless of the causes, the climate changes. It always has. What Steve is saying is correct! Prepare! This isn’t a hard concept, and, if one was to prepare, then “climate change” isn’t very scary.

2-3 degree change? (yes, it’s a fantasy based on fantasy), but I say bring it!

You’re worried about “change”……. here’s to the earth not stagnating! What kind of rational person believes the earth should be static?

      • Daniel Packman says:

I didn’t say anything about worry, just that there are two different events being discussed. Of course a 2 to 3 degree average increase in global temperature isn’t a big deal in itself. That has never been the issue. What kind of rational person doesn’t plan for change?
