These stories of yours are making it darned hard for the alarmists to make sceptics out as nasty CO2 belching monsters who hate the environment. You’ll be making tiny hearing aids for fish next.
I didn’t mention that Barack Obama coordinated the rescue from the White House situation room. The rescue team had helmet cams on and were ordered to gun down the mother after she used the fawn as a human shield.
So Steve, I just realized. You’re biking up by that bridge (apparently somewhat often), but you also shop at a certain grocery store, which I presume you bike to also. They’re separated by 7.5 miles or more! Even if you live halfway between them, that’s still a lot of biking. You must be in pretty good shape, especially if you pull a trailer for grocs and such.
I have been riding about 50 miles per day since the weather turned nice, and carry groceries in a backpack. When I have to get in a car I am miserable, though am spending next week in LA.
In this case the doe may indeed have abandoned it. But in normal circumstances most of these ‘abandoned’ fawns are not abandoned at all. The does just stay away from them a lot to avoid attracting predators. Thus many a do-gooder who ‘saves’ an ‘abandoned’ fawn isn’t really doing good at all.
Nice story for the Bambi crowd though. Now somebody can raise it and then release it… and hope like most tame wildlife it doesn’t have a not-so-happy ending.
Probably would have. As I’m sure you know, young animals have the highest natural mortality rates.
At one point I raised two fawns which were [not] rescued when they were found [not] abandoned. Very interesting. As usual, far more intelligent than one would expect. But I’m guessing that both were shot by hunters or killed by predators not long after their release as they were too tame and thought dogs were fun.
But it is a nice feel good story, and there ain’t a lot of them around these days.
Looks like the tons of warmsnow we got around here this winter knocked our local white-tailed deer pop in half or more. The mule deer did better but all the survivors were skin and bones. Not many fawns will be born around here this spring.
You made my daughter’s day. Congrats! You’re a hero! She’s visiting FC this week for her cousin’s wedding and wants to know where she can donate to the good rescuers.
A most wonderful ending! .. A BIG thank you goes out to the rescuers !!! … I have a VERY soft heart for wildlife, and this story makes my heart feel good.
More like well-fed tax eaters rob a mother of her child. She was probably only yards away waiting for him to make his maiden swim–something deer are adept at. I wonder how much this operation cost the tax slaves.
Aww I love a happy ending.

LOL.
And the baby will be brought up at the White House with the name Obambi?
No, they are actually going to waterboard the baby at Guantanamo. It has the mother lode of subversive wildlife information.
Guess they didn’t say what the plan was. The Doe might return. Could be it’s not far away.
Mother abandoned him? Are they going to take her to Guantanamo too?
They could have borrowed my boat. I would have let em.
Sure I’d have self serving stipulations – like they’d have to name the fawn Papertiger.
Oh what the hell, name the island Papertiger too.

My condolences on LA, but it is much nicer and less polluted than the 60’s and 70’s. The hike up through Hollywoodland to the base of the sign is fun.

It probably would have drowned.

The end of the story –

They put her in some grass near the mother, who had been watching the whole ordeal.
“Baby and Mama were reunited. They are perfectly fine,” said Chico.
It was quite a memorable call for the dive rescue team. For a group that has seen some tough stuff, it was great to have such a positive outcome.

Check with the La Porte Fire Department.
Did they get to keep the meat?
