Green Groups Tell The IPCC That They Are Dangerously Out Of Control

This was signed by more than 100 environmental organizations.

Rajendra K. Pachauri
Chairman of the IPCC
C/O World Meteorological Organization
7bis Avenue de la Paix
C.P. 2300
CH- 1211 Geneva 2, Switzerland

Dear Dr. Pachauri,

The undersigned organizations would like to express our concerns about the upcoming IPCC joint working group expert meeting on geoengineering to be held in Lima, Peru, June 20-22, 2011.

Geoengineering, the intentional large-scale manipulation of the Earth’s systems to modify the climate, is one of the most serious issues the international community will face in the decades ahead. The prospects of artificially changing the chemistry of our oceans to absorb more CO2, modifying the Earth’s radiative balance, devising new carbon sinks in fragile ecosystems, redirecting hurricanes and other extreme weather events are alarming. The potential for accidents, dangerous experiments, inadequate risk assessment, unexpected impacts, unilateralism, private profiteering, disruption of agriculture, inter-state conflict, illegitimate political goals and negative consequences for the global South is high. The likelihood that geoengineering will provide a safe, lasting, democratic and peaceful solution to the climate crisis is non-existent.

Pachauri is not going to give a damn. He’s got his money and fame, and women under his dirty mind quilt. What more could a very ugly many want.

  2. suyts says:

    lol, that’s funny……. my favorite line…….”redirecting hurricanes”……yeppers we’ll get to that tomorrow.

But, there is a serious side to the letter.

The likelihood that geoengineering will provide a safe, lasting, democratic and peaceful solution to the climate crisis is non-existent. ————————– This is exactly true. And, while I don’t think we’re ever going to get to the point where we can re-direct hurricanes, ————- the likelihood of unintended consequences is probably close to 100%.

    There is no danger, kids:

We must merely lower sea level 200 meters by fall, between Spain and Africa:

We shall call our new estate Alantropa:

This will avert our need to invade all of Europe.

So your site is afraid of more than two links? Or only one?

Hmmm…let’s try only two, since three got stuck in the fuck of moderation again.

I tried three links: MODERATION NATION.

    Same thing with two.

Only a single link gets through Sleeping Beauty’s filter.

If I want to toss of a quick comment others can actually *see* today, I need to only drop a single link at a time.

  6. NikFromNYC says:

Ah, but now I’m “posting too quickly.”

    Dude, make your site work!

I agree that geo-engineering is dangerous with the exception of:

    1. White roofs. Small but worthwhile effect.

    2. Biochar. The best long term solution. It has the potential to even reverse the rise of Carbon Dioxide. However, it is labor intensive.

    • Sleepalot says:

“Biochar”? Farmers used to burn the stubble, but greenies got that banned.

    • Justa Joe says:

ill, What is the surface area of all roof tops and even paved surfaces in the world vs. the entire surface area of the world? Does it even approach .01%?

      • I keep my roof white all winter. I would prefer it to be a darker color to compensate for the plummeting winter temperatures we have been experiencing.

      • Justa Joe says:

My house is in the middle of a pretty sparcely populated area in what is known as the high desert. The roof is currently in perfectly fine condition. I’d love to see a cost vs. benefit analysis of ripping off my roofing and or somehow painting it white. Seems like more blow-viating by the aptly named Ill Wind.

  9. Al Gored says:

These people love meetings. Now its off to Peru for some science fiction workshops.

“Two weeks of tense global climate talks wrapped up on Friday, with countries insisting they had made progress on technical issues but accepting they were still nowhere near agreement in the three key areas of finance, greenhouse gas emission cuts and the future of the Kyoto protocol.”

    • Mike Davis says:

They finally agreed there are 24 hours in a day! They need further studies to determine the cause of sunrise and sunset but with sufficient funding they expect to have an idea how to approach the issue in about 40 years.

  10. Jimbo says:

In years to come children will be happy that sceptics existed in our age of false alarm.

“I’m deeply disappointed that the only country in the EU that could not accept a good compromise on how we can move Europe to a low carbon economy was Poland,” Huhne said in a statement.

“It’s a dark day for Europe’s leading role in tackling climate change, but the UK together with its European colleagues will continue to make the economic case for tighter EU carbon targets so that we can make the most of the future green economy,” he added.” “
