Picture California a few decades from now, a place so hot and arid the state’s trademark orange and lemon trees have been replaced with olive trees that can handle the new climate. Alternating floods and droughts have made it impossible for the reservoirs to capture enough drinking water. The picturesque Highway 1, sections of which are already periodically being washed out by storm surges and mudslides, will have to be rerouted inland, possibly through a mountain. These aren’t scenes from another deadly-weather thriller like The Day After Tomorrow. They’re all changes that California officials believe they need to brace for within the next decade or two.
Summer temperatures in California are much cooler than they were 120 years ago, and last August was the coldest on record in Los Angeles.

As usual, Newsweek has no idea what they are talking about and have done no fact checking.
What’s wrong with olive trees?
Remember, even Monbiot was able to understand what’s wrong with these apocalypses that aren’t…attack of the killer orange groves???
Off topic, but Environment Canada is predicting a hotter than normal summer. Let’s see if they are better at predictions than the MET office:

“Alternating floods and droughts have made it impossible for the reservoirs to capture enough drinking water.”
The whole purpose of the reservoirs is to handle floods and droughts. We fill them when we have conditions that would cause flooding without them, we empty them when we have little rain. If we had steadier rainfall like many other regions, we wouldn’t need nearly the system we have. (And we would have a bigger and more robust system if it weren’t for the environmentalists…)
One wonders if Newsweak can write about FUTURE “news” with better accuracy than PRESENT news events.
I doubt it.
Sacramento just finished May averaging 6 degrees (F) below normal. Today, June 1st at 4 PM Pacific time (warmest part of the day), Lake Tahoe is 33 degrees with heavy snow! These warmists are so far out of touch with reality that it’s scary.
Andy, you’re absolutely right. I don’t WHY the alarmists insist on looking at 150 years of data, or 10,000 years of data…..when they can look at your ONE data point and CLEARLY see that the earth is cooling.
Very good point Andy….
In the who said segment in the thread we have:
“Keith Kloor is having fun being kwuooeeeel (cruel) to poor Joe Romm, simply because Romm is being an anti-scientific bozo pushing groundless fears of cancer-from-mobile-phones. Keith has a nice collection of links to sane people pointing out that there is no evidence of a problem. One of whom is Orac, in a post entertainingly entitled The bride of the son of the revenge of cell phones and cancer rises from the grave…again. And the key quote is Still, despite my trying to keep an open mind on the matter, I also don’t want my mind to be so open that my brains fall out, so to speak. Alas, Romm has failed to heed that wise advice, so his brains have indeed fallen out.”
Guess who wrote the above? Hint: initials are WC
Who would have thought that their climate would alternate between droughts and flood, just like it has done since the dawn of time?
Who would have thought they would replace one non-native tree with another….
Newsweek calls them trees, the farmers call them a crop.
Picture NEWSWEEK a few years from now, a once respected glossy news magazine, now tossed on peoples’ walks every week like a advert throw-away…
Check the source – that is what you get for a buck (it just affirms cliche of you get what you pay for).
