Record Inflow Into Lake Powell

June is the peak month for snowmelt, and 2011 is breaking all the records. Three of the last four years have been well above average.

    June won’t be the peak this year, July will be. In September 2008 there were still huge areas of thick snow drifts on most high peaks. Maybe we will be starting new glaciers after this year.

    For the short term, the situation is great. But even without climate change, a cyclical drought will hit sooner or later.

    The wide variations in water flow through the Colorado River is why Glenn Canyon Dam was built and one of the main reasons for Lake Powell. Lake Powell is a storage reservoir as a buffer for “Drought” years.
