1895 : A Very Very Hotcold Year

1895 was the first year of the USHCN dataset. Every single station (about 1,000 of them) set a record high and record low on every single day that year. That is 365,000 record highs and 365,000 record lows set during the year 1895. (Many of these were broken in later years.)

Can I have a job writing for Live Science now?

    Wasn’t that also the year record snow was observed in Texas, especially Galveston? I seem to recall something like 15″ of snow on the beach in Galveston.
