Irene could be “once-in-50-year” hurricane for the Northeast from the standpoint of power outages caused by downed trees alone.

Where they have it as a 4, it is now a 2, and forecasted to weaken further beginning Friday night. My prediction is that it hits around NYC as a Cat1, and like most Cat 1s, is mostly a nuisance for a few days. This is not the apocalypse, despite the media trying to make it so. Everybody needs to calm down. I am beginning to agree with my brother the pharmacist that we ought to put Valium in the water supply. Or, at the very least, in the water coolers of the press and meterologists.

You can tell they have no predictive skills…..
    …..They hype each other up

  3. Latitude says:

    ….from a Cat 4
    to a total eyewall collapse

All in less than 24 hours

It has to come through us to get to them. We will see.

The most notable storm of 1979 was Hurricane David, a Category 5 storm on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale that killed over 2,000 people, mostly in the Dominican Republic, and caused nearly 1.5 billion dollars in damage (1979 USD). Hurricane Frederic, which caused $2.3 billion (1979 US dollars and became the most expensive hurricane in United States history when it made landfall near the border between Mississippi and Alabama.

David an east coast storm was pretty bad.

Barely hanging on to Cat 2 now… just a notch above Cat 1

  6. Kaboom says:

How does that compare to hurricanes between 1850 and 1900 when it comes to power outages? Stupid metric that it is more dependent on the number of tall trees with weak roots and the number and location of power lines than the strength of the storm.

    From NRDC Switchboard 8/25/11

“Climate change is projected to significantly increase the intensity of hurricanes and other storms. We have already seen a record-breaking year in 2011 with major winter storms, tornados in the spring, record-breaking heatwaves this summer, and now a potentially devastating hurricane. Things are so bad that the new “normal” weather is swinging into a pattern of extremes. The climate-related events of 2011 so far bear an estimated price tag of $265 billion, at a time when our nation can ill-afford it.

Our climate is already changing right before our eyes, and it’s not a pretty sight. As a health professional, I am pleading with politicians in Washington DC to take practical steps to deal with climate change…. Before it deals with us.”

It’s the last sentence that is mind-boggling…..yep, the politicians can change the climate…..She’s PLEADING with them……unfreaking believable.

She fits right in to that group.

NRDC = National Resources Defense Council

RFK jr. is one of their core members. He is a stuttering drug-addled empty-headed chip off the old blockhead. Just watch a speech or interview with him.

Nothing else needs to be said about the NRDC except for the fact that RFK jr is involved.

Well that, and the fact that they are as subversive as the ACLU or Communist Party USA.

Sorry I have not posted earlier – I was around ground zero of this bad girl (virginia). It really was not as bad as the hype – except if you lost power! 75% in central virginia did. But that was about it. They got the track right, just the intensity wrong.
