FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WUSA) — Eleven-year-old aspiring veterinarian, Skylar Capo, sprang into action the second she learned that a baby woodpecker in her Dad’s backyard was about to be eaten by the family cat.
“I’ve just always loved animals,” said Skylar Capo. “I couldn’t stand to watch it be eaten.”
Skylar couldn’t find the woodpecker’s mother, so she brought it to her own mother, Alison Capo, who agreed to take it home.
“She was just going to take care of it for a day or two, make sure it was safe and uninjured, and then she was going to let it go,” said Capo.
But on the drive home, the Capo family stopped at this Lowes and they brought the bird inside because of the heat. That’s when they were confronted by a woman from the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
…
two weeks later, that same woman from the Department of Fish and Wildlife showed up at the Capo’s front door. This time, Capo says she was accompanied by a state trooper. Alison Capo was cited for unlawfully taking a migratory bird and now she’s been slapped with a $535 fine.
Disrupting the Borg is expensive and time consuming!

Wasn’t florida
I see he corrected it. Lots of people misplace Fredericksburg however. 😉
Wow! Do I owe some back fines. Let’s see, there was a mallard duck and a robin, that covers migratory birds. Then there were several snakes, two squirrels, a hedgehog, a few turtles and a rabbit. My family hunts and we adore nature. When a little one is distressed it is instinctual to offer assistance. Big brother has no soul.
I estimate that we need to cut 80% of all government workers to increase efficiency. We would have a better government, and a surplus to boot.
No good deed will go unpunished….
I suggest that readers find a news story to get the facts. Typing in ‘capo’ and ‘woodpecker’ will do the trick.
Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries (Richmond headquarters):
Phone: (804) 367-1000
Fax: (804) 367-9147
Executive Director Robert “Bob” W. Duncan: (804) 367-9231
Law Enforcement – Colonel Dabney Watts: (804) 367-0171
From the story, “The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries did not participate in the inquiry.”
Well that is nice that the fine was canceled.
How about this one :
John Dollarhite and his wife Judy of tiny Nixa, Mo., have been told by the USDA that, by Monday, they must pay a fine exceeding $90,000. If they don’t pay that fine, they could face additional fines of almost $4 million. Why? Because they sold more than $500 worth of bunnies — $4,600 worth to be exact — in a single calendar year.

This is a great example of the all-to-common poor judgement used by our various agencies and agents. Hopefully, the special-ed agent for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was dismissed and she’s found something else to do with her life other than trying to criminalize honest citizens while living off of our dime.
So, they withdrew the citation…… it doesn’t mean that it can’t happen again, and it will. It is beyond time for us to reign in this wanton disregard of the notion non-interference into our personal lives. Its despicable.
