New Scientist : Herbivores Can’t Survive A Warm Climate

Climate change will create a toxic brew for herbivores

A WARMER world might be a poisoned one. A compilation of studies suggests that as temperatures rise, herbivorous mammals will suffer greater effects from the toxins they eat, with animals living in dry regions at particular risk.

Mammals can maintain a constant body temperature and so are thought to be less vulnerable to temperature changes than cold-blooded animals like reptiles. But Denise Dearing at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City has found evidence that mammals feel the heat in subtle ways.

This explains why herbivores in warm climates are so small and sickly.

Perhaps they are better off grazing on the ice?

The soot and dust particals make a good diet on the ice for those grazing animals. That is why they build up so much body fat for the winter months.

It is unfathomable why utter bull like this makes it through even the most cursory review.

LSM….you don’t have to have any knowledge, a BS story sells…
      Facts…we don’t need no stinkn fact….

The review at http://www.springerlink.com/content/p427014613820547/ gives the game away – ‘The role of temperature-dependent toxicity is considered with respect to the observed changes in herbivorous species attributed to climate change. Possible future investigations and the effects of temperature-dependent toxicity on other endotherms are presented. ‘

    Possible Future investigations=More money wanted.

    Oh, the poor sweet babies!
They could never have survived if we don’t help the poor wibble things.
Darwin was completely wrong: the poor things only survive if we cuddle and pet them!

Those dinosaurs sure had it rough in a warmer world! Ask Fred Flintstone. He can tell you.

  6. Junk science red flag: a multitude of studies are needed to prove something. Translation = no individual study can support the claim being made.

Junk science flag: the effects are subtle. Translation = evidence is weak at best. Parapsychology research also has ‘subtle’ effects. This might also be described as ‘noise’.

  7. This year was (statistically) 0.7°C warmer than it was 120 years ago. That means the high to-day was 73.4° instead of a much more temperate 72.1°, which is why all of the chipmuns and squirrels died.

I have a confession to make. Nine times out of ten, I wash down my herbivore burgers with toxic brew.

Didn’t you hear? Clinton’s going up to the Arctic to see climate change! I wonder if he’ll send us any pictures!

  10. dmmcmah says:

Interesting the article said a 10 degree rise in temperature makes mice more susceptible to caffeine poisoning Isn’t that a plus? People can just leave coffee out if they have a mouse problem.

On another note even if there really were a 10 degree rise in temperature, it would be gradual so animals livers would likely adapt over time.

Oh wait don’t mice experience 40 degree temperature swings right now???
