Many skeptics take issue with what they call systemic data manipulation. For example, climate blogger Steve Goddard told FoxNews.com that “adjustments” made in the past to climate data have merely conflated the problem Watts uncovered.
“They started making what they called corrections after the year 2000, which turned the U.S. temperature trend from completely flat to fairly steep warming. That’s what Anthony was questioning. The corrections were changing the temperature record,” Goddard said.
Several large adjustments hadn’t been documented at all, boosting readings by as much as 1.5 degrees over older measurements.
“It’s hard to tell exactly what they’re doing at this point,” he said.

The published USHCN correction graphs show about 0.5F of data tampering, but I see closer to three times that amount.

Whatever they are doing now, the adjustments are much larger than what they show in the graph above.
Meanwhile in another part of the world a group of concerned citizens have taken the NIWA to court over what it believes are largely bogus adjustments to the temperature record creating most of the claimed warming.
“The matters arise between the plaintiff’s (the Coalition’s) Statement of Claim (SOC) and the Defendant’s (NIWA’s) Statement of Defence (SOD). NIWA counter-claimed they had no obligation to pursue excellence or to use best-quality scientific practices and also that the national temperature record was not only not official, but they themselves had no obligation to produce or maintain it.”
If correct, I suppose that would explain why their temperature reconstruction is crap, and when push came to shove, they weren’t particularly enthusiastic about attempting to defend it when called out on it. Your tax dollars at work…

NIWA claims New Zealand has warmed by 0.9C. Then they claimed the dog/goat ate their homework showing the adjustments they did to the temp data.
Lucklily some of the original NZ temp data apparently was stored in the National Library archives, so that’s how they got found out. 🙂
NIWA climate scientists are right up in on the AGW/CC scam. Key NIWA climate scientists were lead authors in the IPCC AR4 and Synthesis reports.
Ex NIWA scientist Jim Salinger was apparently the one who was behind the NIWA temp data series released. He was sacked by NIWA for what they termed ‘being too public’. He used to get involved in Greenpeace Climate Change protests.
Jim Salinger also was the UN WMO President for Agricultural Meteorology from 2006-2010.
One thing they can’t “adjust” for is when we go outside and it’s colder then its ever been. There was one little regional heat wave in the US that got all the media attention, but all year long and over all 4 corners of the planet we’ve had record -cold- being reported. This has not been consistent with the contention that we live in a period of record runaway heat. Not close.
And the coup de gras, I just tuned in to see the ladies play some summer olympic volleyball, and instead of the promised bikinis, they’re wearing these thick long underwear outfits to keep from getting frostbite. If anything is proof that gwarming is a dud, look at these women volleyball players in London, a day away from it being August, in the middle of the day, but dressed in double layers and covering their ankles like they’re trying to appease the Taliban.
Here in the desert southwest in Phoenix Az it has been an exceptionally mild summer and wet – it rained again this weekend. As far as trends, we haven’t had a hot summer since 1995. What are these Man-Made Global Warming people even talking about?
It is abundantly clear that Man-Made Global Warming is created, artificially, and for whatever reason, in government records intentionally. How upsetting. And sad.

GISS Surface Air Temperature Analysis (GISTEMP)
“The GHCN/USHCN/SCAR data was modified in two stages to get to the station data on which all the tables, graphs, and maps are based: in stage 1 at each location the time records of the various sources are combined; in stage 2 the non-rural stations are adjusted in such a way that their long term trend of annual means is as close as possible to that of the mean of the neighboring rural stations. Non-rural stations that cannot be adjusted are dropped. The analysis includes results for a global temperature index as described by Hansen et al. (1996).”
Well Steve, if GHCN have corrected the raw data then GISS is correcting the data and the final data set is the adjusted/homogenized no wonder it so far from reality.
