Last 12 Months Was The 10th Hottest In The US

NOAA has been claiming that the last twelve months was the hottest in US history, but USHCN data places that in doubt. The table below shows the ten hottest 12 month periods in US history, based on measured (raw monthly) maximum temperatures.

September 1933 - August 1934 67.92
December 1933 - November 1934 67.90
August 1933 - July 1934 67.78
November 1933 - October 1934 67.72
June 1933 - May 1934 67.71
October 1933 - September 1934 67.62
July 1933 - June 1934 67.60
January 1934 - December 1934 67.51
April 1934 - March 1935 67.45
July 2011 - June 2012 67.40

Maximum temperatures are less affected by UHI than minimum temperatures, and are a better measure of relative temperatures.

I can almost hear the halls of federal research agencies ringing, “Damn it Steve, forget those numbers, focus on the message!”

    Hang in there, Steve!

Are they unadjusted, or adjusted figures?

  3. Real Climate argued that anything that happened in the US was unimportant as it only amounted to less than 2% of the planet’s surface area. Oddly, a warm month in the US now appears to be deeply significant and strong evidence of global warming.

(It was actually these sorts of contradictory claims that made me realise that the Warmists were not the bright lights I’d originally assumed and were actually closer to being FOS.)

  4. Brian G Valentine says:

Good thing people didn’t have Jim Hansen to listen to in 1934. They had enough misery to last them.

    “It will NEVER cool down.”
“It will NEVER rain in Kansas again, ever.”
“The only thing you can to is to migrate to Hudson’s Bay. That will extend your existence for about three years.”
I told you this was going to happen. Over and over.”

“NOAA has been claiming that the last twelve months was the hottest in US history, but USHCN data places that in doubt.”

Even up here in the communist northeast where they made such a fuss about the July heatwave (LOL!), it strikes me as just average. I am not sure it even hit 100° yet. I remember many years where it did 100° sometimes for a week at a time.

They are clearly just lying about everything. Everything. I don’t believe a godamn word anymore. Each summer they pull this crap and the worthless media plays along. Liars to the left of me …

  6. How did you do this Steve? I can see how to get state monthly data, how did you come up with a USA (presumably weighted) average? Thanks.

    • I have added some stuff to my USHCN code and will release it soon. The average is not weighted, which tends to exaggerate recent temperatures because the density of USHCN stations is highest in the northeast.
