Satellites See Unprecedented Greenland Ice Sheet Surface Melt

Even the area around Summit Station in central Greenland, which at 2 miles above sea level is near the highest point of the ice sheet, showed signs of melting. Such pronounced melting at Summit and across the ice sheet has not occurred since 1889, according to ice cores analyzed by Kaitlin Keegan at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather station at Summit confirmed air temperatures hovered above or within a degree of freezing for several hours July 11-12.

I look at the Greenland Summit webcam just about every day. There has never been any visible indication of melt this month, and the month has averaged about -10C.

Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time,” says Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data.

When the next batch of sea level data comes out, we will again see that there was no spike in sea level, because there was no measurable increase in melting – indicating that the people behind this scam are completely FOS.

It would seem to me to be ironic, that unprecedented melting only happens every 150 years.
BTW Neptune’s orbital period is ~164 years, and as the gas giants orbit the sun, the solar systems center of gravity will actually be outside the surface of the Sun at certain conjunctures.

  2. Andy DC says:

“It’s worse than we though!!” Even if zilch is happening.

  3. Eric Webb says:

Yeah, also seen on Master’s site where a blogger was indicating that nearly all of Greenland was melting today, via satellite, wow these people really are full of it

  4. Sparks says:

I think I know what’s going on here!! These Anthropogenic Global Warming Scientists are conducting an experiment on the public using behavioral modification techniques, every time they say key words like “Unprecedented” or phrases like “worse than we thought” then some brain-washed member of the public opens their cheque book.

    • Shooter says:

“Unprecedented” is a weasel word. It is meant to invoke emotion. Now let’s say actual cats and dogs fell down from the sky. Now that is unprecedented.

      • Dave N says:

In most cases it’s just a blatant lie. Either that, or they’ve redefined what unprecedented means, since it isn’t placed in any context.

It can also be like saying “the world’s current human population is unprecedented”.. Ok.. it’s something that hasn’t happened before.. Now what?

  5. Marian says:

“this event is right on time’

That would b funny to Twitter Bill McnutKibben with.

Bill relax Greenland’s melting right on time. 🙂

    Steve E Cole – upholding NASA’s reputation.

UHI? Funny how the temperature sensor was directly downwind of the Camp on the relevant day. On 11 July at 18:00UTC when they recorded +0.5C the wind was 7 knots from from 345 degrees.

  7. John B., M.D. says:

http://policlimate.com/climate/cfsr/cfsr_t2m_global.html – Note alternating hotspots and coldspots. Greenland has been under a hotspot for most of the time period under discussion, which is certainly consistent with surface melt, but note the last few days Greenland is colder than avg. Run your mouse arrow along the row of numbers representing July 9 through July 23 to create a cool movie of temperature (red means warmer than avg, blue means colder). HuffPo and even some NASA scientists (esp. if work at GISS under Hansen) are biased and won’t report the coldspots with a press release, e.g. over Alaska, Europe, Australia, South America, Siberia and China/Central Asia. We call this “cherry-picking.” And, of course, everything is attributed to AGW, not natural cycles. The alarmists in the U.K. blame AGW for their cold wet summer, yet had predicted heat and drought this summer as recently as the spring, which they had also blamed on AGW. One sign of a pseudoscientific theory is that it is not “falsifiable,” and the supposed sequelae of AGW are not falsifiable since “every” weather event is “consistent with” AGW.

  9. (RTOFS (Atlantic) Nowcasts/Forecasts) from NOAA
Steven follow you all the time about the lies from NASA and NOAA but the funny thing friend look at RTOFS (Atlantic) Nowcasts/Forecasts they cant lie about their raw North Atlantic Data shows all the sea temps are down I believe by going this raw data the arctic sea is going to beat last years record early ice development and another of news UKs winters birds had return early from the arctic breeding grounds back in May way to early this is not natural my friend I work with WWT they blamed the jet stream for I dont believe because there breed grounds has not cleared from ice and half of the winter geese numbers has stayed all year here in Strangford Laugh in Northern Ireland first time this bird has stayed since there numbers were studyed all I know this bird should be still in Greenland and Siberia I put my money on the UK is in a world of trouble

Occasionally they do indeed speak sanely. Like here:
    So – it’s occurring again?

    Glacier changes
The terminus of Greenland’s largest glacier, the Jakobshavn’s Isbrae near the town of Ilulissat, retreated 0 to 500 m in 2007 (Fig. G3), continuing a retreat that began summer 2001 with a dramatic 11-km floating ice collapse (Weidick and Bennike 2007). The large ice lagoon called Tissarissoq at the south side of the fjord was flushed of ice by the end of the summer, ice-free probably for the first time since at least the onset of the Little Ice Age (ca. 0.4–0.1 ky BP). It is possible that Tissarissoq was ice-free before that time during the medieval warm period (ca. 1.1–0.5 ky BP).

Indeed it is possible. How about probable?
