Any alarmist study that begins around 1980 is highly suspect. 1980 was near the end of a signifcant cooling period from 1955-1979. It would be more significant to see how 2012 compares to 1940 or 1950. If you compare 2012 to 1980, the decrease may be just a return to pre-1955 normals rather than an unprecedented, catastrophic event.
