I do not understand – but I am now absolutely certain that – international intrigue is the root of the Climategate scandal. I was told that a NASA Atlas V rocket carried Rover to Mars and advised that this suggests Obama is serious in his threat to invade Syria, despite warnings of retaliation from Russia and China.

You don’t understand the point of Google News, or how it works. Articles remain on it only for a limited time, the length of which is set by Google’s mysterious algos. That’s so that a search returns only current news.
My articles remain for a few months. Others longer, or shorter. It’s not like the main google, an archive.
There is the google news archive to find older material.
I use google news search every day for articles going back to the 19th century. You have no idea what you are talking about

(1) Please give us an example of a Google News search that returns articles from the 19th century. You don’t appear to using the archive function (which returns 32 hits for a “Goderich obama” search) or custom range. You don’t say what specific item you’re looking for).
(2) Try searching on Google News for old articles. It’s easy to do in for specific website (source:) that publishes infrequently, so you can see all the articles. You’ll see them drop off after a few weeks.
Or try “Katrina New Orleans”; the oldest story returned is 25 July 2012. Nothing from the million stories in 2005!
(3) If your site is published on Google News you can see old articles drop off day by day. Go to Webmaster tools, Health, Crawl Errors, News.
When they drop they appear with the error message “Date too old”, which is defined as “The date that we determined for this article, either from a tag in the Sitemap, or from a date in the page HTML itself, is too old.”

You are writing about science, and this is an empirical question. I made an assertion, and documented it by describing a test I’ve done — and that you can replicate — along with explanatory documentation from Google. It appears you just misunderstood one aspect of Google News, easy since Google explains very little. I made no insults.

(1) A repeat of your original assertion — that your google search returned no results. I did *not* disagree with you, but instead explained *why* that is so: it’s the normal operation of Google News. You have to use Google News Archive or Custom Search to find older articles.

Creating the Internet was a science of it’s own, (Inconvenient for some one and now a bunch of others) but what some deem to allow others to see on isn’t. Like kim2000, I have bing (bing! — never mind, it’s a “Friends” inside joke). As an intelligent human being over the age of 13, I don’t trust Google (unreservedly, shall we say) any farther than I can throw them (though I use Google Translate routinely, for translations — and if you have done that, you will see yet another reason not to trust them unreservedly). So this is not news, to me, and again, Big Deal, Buckaroo Banzai (I may start associating that name with you in my mind, Steven — and no insult intended, I like Buckaroo Banzai, and he’s not real anyway). The phrases, “caveat emptor” and “tanstaafl” come to mind. (I don’t trust anyone’s internet apps today — and I don’t trust the internet, which is like the cheesiest, run-down, neon-lit, red-light district ever… or much like Las Vegas — “What happens on the Internet, stays on the Internet”, unless, of course, Google or the like takes it off.)

I trust Bing more than Google as well, however, I could not really tell you why, other than I have found fewer controversial stories surrounding Bing. This is probably naive on my part. I remain guarded and skeptical of all of them to one degree or another. One of the research projects I have been working with for the past decade deals with the various search engines and specifically SEO (Search Engine Optimization). I have a pretty good handle on what search engines are all about, and how they work (including selective removal of material references), as I have developed one of the most powerful and successful SEO engines on the planet (one of my few proud accomplishments).
Thanks, Squid. Your reply is most welcome and more or less confirms my own belief that Microsoft and Google are equally untrustworthy. At one time I trusted Google more, and Yahoo even more than that. But now I find that the latter two have sunken and I find them all equally suspicious. That said, I still it’s newsworthy if the most heavily used search engine deliberately, maliciously, and without comment disappears an article about the White House occupant less than 2 1/2 months before he stands for “re-election”.
