Summer temperatures in Arizona peaked in 1896, and recent summers have been among the coolest on record.
As I mentioned earlier, I was a student at ASU in 1974 – the year they had eighteen days in a row over 110 degrees.
1974 was right at the peak of the global cooling scare. It was also the year of the worst tornado outbreak in US history and some of the worst flooding in Queensland’s history.
More importantly, it was the year that Nixon resigned over something far less serious than Obama’s gun running to Mexico.

This has not been a particularly hot summer in Phoenix. I have lived here for decades. It has been a mild summer. It rained last night and is overcast today. My outside thermometer in south Tempe is below 90 degrees F. What are these people talking about?
I am pretty sure that temperatures for Phoenix on the national news are from the readings from the thermometer located at Sky Harbor Airport and it reads notoriously high.
Another node in our high-quality surface station network, no doubt. Have to check at Anthony’s Surface Stations project to see if this one is covered, but I’d be surprised if not.
OK, went out and checked wunderground…these are wimp temperatures for Phoenix. This is nothing for August.

I spend two summers working at the Palo Verde nuclear plant and recall how it was often 100 F already when we would leave for work at 5:30 AM.
I’ll say this for Joe Romm. I think he’s a true believer, rather than someone looking to push the agenda of elites on high telling us what is good for us.
Just a note on Brisbane Queensland.
1893 was the largest recorded flood in Brisbane.
1974 was next.
2011 was next although the flood control dam obviously made a difference then.
A lot of people would have seen coverage of the 2011 floods but the more interesting statistics go unreported.
2012 (no major flooding) was the wettest January to June of any year since 1974 which still holds the record – 1893 was probably the real record holder but Brisbane was a baby then and records are patchy except the well recorded flood height.
While our idiotic CSIRO is parroting the rest of the CO2 muddled consensus we are again shown the need to understand the El-Nino/La-Nina events.
During El-Nino periods Australia is generally in the grips of drought and every major rain event in my 58 years has coincided with La-Nina events.
