The Great Heat Wave of 1896 lasted from August 4-14 and may have killed as many as 1,500 people in the city, with temperatures reaching an astounding 120 degrees Fahrenheit inside the hot, unventilated tenements on the Lower East Side.

Wow how ignorant does it sound that I honestly never thought that temperatures reached that high and killed that many people back then. I guess really I’m just self centered enough that I’m sitting in my house in front of my hpc3000 ac unit and just trying to keep cool myself in 104′ weather. I’m blown away thank you for sharing this is unbelievable.
