    It’s worse than we thought! 1936, not 2012.

    Nationwide, July 2012 had a higher mean temperature than July 1936 according to the NOAA. The NOAA has not said that August 2012 is hotter than 1936 (and readings to data indicate that it is not).

    Now, if the comment about 2012 being warmer than 1936 concerns the year-to-date period (January-July) rather than August, there is no real “contest.” 2012 has been far warmer than 1936. The January-July 2012 mean temperature for the contiguous U.S. was 56.41°F. The same period in 1936 had a mean temperature of 51.78°F. The last time any January-July period was at least as cool was 1993 with a mean temperature of 51.32°F.
