Mark Serreze explains how an upwards trend is actually a slow downwards trend.
“Antarctic sea ice hasn’t seen these big reductions we’ve seen in the Arctic. This is not a surprise to us,” said climate scientist Mark Serreze, director of the NSIDC
While Arctic melts, Antarctic ice hits record. Is warming debunked? – CSMonitor.com
This is complete bullshit. In 2007, EPA published this Hansen map predicting peak ice loss in the southern hemisphere. Note the red circle below

You gotta hand it to the warmists. When observational reality doesn’t match their climate-change prognostications, they are experts at inventing pseudo-scientific claptrap to explain their failure. They have a boilerplate excuse for every failed prediction. When an earlier prediction fails, they simply deny they ever made it or grant themselves an extension. They’ve made so many bogus end-of-days prophecies, they make Hal Lindsey (“The Late, Great Planet Earth”) look like a true psychic.
Here’s another failed prediction:
Nearly ice-free my butt. Faster melting of the Arctic obviously means an expanding Antarctica.
Nearly ice-free my butt.

Isn’t the chart you show lifted from a Hansen paper from 1984? I thought I read that in the figure caption in the 2004 document you linked. Although I suppose if they use it to support EPA arguments in 2004, then they still had faith in its veracity in 2004…
Thanks, I changed the text
I read this nonsense around the web today, Comments are typical of although it is possible that Antarctica ice will reach a new record high this year the over all trend is that it is losing Ice. What kind of BS is this? Up is now a downward trend, but down is down. It reminds me of the grand old Duke of York nursery rhyme but logically reversed.
like this;
Oh, the grand old Duke of York,
He had ten thousand men,
He marched them up to the top of
The hill and he marched
Them down again.
And when they were up they were on a downward trend.
And when they were down they were down.
And when they were only half way up,
They were on a downward trend..
Increasing Antarctic ice is every bit as consistent with a warming planet as decreasing ice (sarc).
We’ve always been at war with Eastasia.
It should be a surprise to Serreze because there is no trend there or the trend is slightly negative and the climate models predicted the opposite.
I had thought it was Serreze who had made the comment that warming at both poles – in contrast to the warming in the first half of the 20th century which was mostly in the Northern hemisphere – was evidence that the present warming was man-made. Perhaps I was wrong, although i recall somebody saying this in recent years.
1. Maximum regional warming occurs in Antarctica by 33% more than anywhere else on the planet
2. Ice is increasing in Antarctica.
Conclusion: We need to add more heat, so we can get more ice.
Dumb comment
