Other witnesses also emphasized the principle of damage and risk mitigation. Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, a director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University, asked legislators to think about the ways society depended on current climate conditions.
“We have built a civilization on the assumption of a stable climate,” she said. “If we were still living in tents, climate change wouldn’t be as big of a problem. But we can’t move Houston 100 feet uphill.”

We have been undergoing a period of unusual climate stability for the last couple hundred years. The party will end someday, but when or how is anybody’s guess.
“If we were still living in tents, climate change wouldn’t be as big of a problem.”
Uh, I think it would. She discounts hundreds of years of human innovation to deal with the elements and keep us safe and comfortable. Yea, living in tents would be a big improvement. Spoken by a true green zeolot.
…and Debbie Wasserman Schultz
They both have way too many cats…………..
Just Like David Appell. Seems to be a trend.
Yep. Always the women!
Katherine seems much smarter when she keeps silent.
If one relocated Houston 100 ft A.S.L., the shore would catch up in about 15,000 yrs. (at present rates, which of course will not persist)
But, obviously, there’s no time to waste!!
From Ground Zero of Texas Global Warming and Sea Level rise today:
RECORD EVENT REPORT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
421 PM CDT FRI MAY 03 2013
…RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE SET AT GALVESTON…
A RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE OF 50 DEGREES WAS SET AT GALVESTON TODAY.
THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 54 DEGREES SET IN 1876. THIS ALSO
ESTABLISHES A NEW RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF
MAY. THE PREVIOUS COLDEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED IN THE CITY OF
GALVESTON DURING THE MONTH OF MAY WAS 52 DEGREES AND OCCURRED ON MAY
4 1954.
It would be easier if we lived in tents.
IS that the plan ?
Latest peer reviewed paper on sea level rise by 2100: five inches.
Perhaps Ms Hayhoe might like to read it, since she is a climate scientist.
That five inches is before all the positive feedbacks, like when Al Gore steps in the puddle.
First rule of climatism; Just throw anything out there.
Stilts!! 100 foot high stilts!! Houston can be the Venice of North America!!!

Well. I was just trying to help Katherine Heywho sound less crazy. Doesn’t work does it.
As Jim Lovell said – “Houston. You gotta be kidding right?”
Didn’t think someone with such high academic credentials would try to channel Algore, especially in light of his lack of biblical, theological credentials; “Gore: Weather like a walk through Revelation.”
http://www.junkscience.com/2013/01/29/gore-weather-like-a-walk-through-revelation
It seems to me that Hayhoe is worried that sea levels will rise 140 feet. Houston’s elevation is 50 feet. If Houston were raised 100 feet and there was a 140 foot rise in sea levels, Houston would still stand 10 feet above the Gulf of Mexico that has been raised by the temperatures of Hayhoe’s feverish imagination. For perspective, Galveston’s elevation is 7 feet.
Katherine’s funding must be running out. Have you noticed that the wildest non-scientific claims about the climate make the author more respected by the so-called climate scientists.
Lets see her make fun of the trailer park she grew up in now! 😉
Since when is the climate stable? Hayhoe may be one of most obtuse female bipeds to ever practice the “climate science” racket. She’s certainly an embarrassment to Texas Tech University. When I read her comments, I’m reminded of Mark Twain’s famous quote:
“Better to be silent and thought stupid, then to speak and remove all doubt.”
She removed all doubt the first time she opened her mouth!
Please note that NASA says if all the South pole melted, sea levels would rise 197 feet. Why did . Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, a director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University, only estimate 100 feet?
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/20100108_Is_Antarctica_Melting.html
We have trouble thinking about long term effects like 100 or 200 years. Do we reallly know that all the sea ice won’t melt?
Global sea ice has averaged above normal this year, and even if all the sea ice melted it would have no impact on sea level.
Dude, you need to do a little review. How much sea ice is there at the South Pole?
