For several years I made the assumption that the consensus scientists were intelligent people with reasonable theories and ideas based on good maths and deductive logic. I don’t think they were necessarily right, as most scientific theories eventually turn out to be wrong. But I thought they had a reasonable basis for their claims. Then their major advocates switched to promoting extreme weather events (absence of long term trends). At that point the penny dropped and I realised they were actually cranks.
