How weather drives our herd mentality
We all like to think of ourselves as individuals, making up our own minds what to do and when to do it.
But in Human Swarm, a new Channel 4 documentary, Jimmy Doherty reveals new evidence that suggests that in many ways we actually think and move like members of a herd of animals and that this swarm behaviour is driven by the powerful force of the weather.
The Met Office has the expertise and experience to combine the latest science with ground breaking advances in technology and local understanding to deliver operational advantage to our customers that can help businesses manage risks and opportunities as they arise from our weather and our collective behaviour.
Disrupting the Borg is expensive and time consuming!

It’s called “post-normal” science: Totally meaningless gibberish, in the name of sociological expertise. I suspect the sociologists invented it out of thin air (as is their characteristic method of operation, in my experienced view). They think–no, believe–it trumps the scientific method of the days of yore, i.e., the distant, primitive past to them; so yes, they think they are smarter than us. I am reminded of a science fiction novel of about 50 years ago, about the Earth passing through a cosmic cloud that made everyone smart, then made everyone stupid when the world emerged from it…I estimate we emerged from such a cloud about 40 years ago, and we are now well on our way to being a world of gerbils.
They coud have just said:
British people dupid, Met Office quever
Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds only applies to other people.
That Met Office blog article is indeed gibberish.
Our swarm behaviour continues when we leave our homes. When the temperature drops below 10 deg C we use 43% more fuel just in the first mile of journeys. The cold makes the oil thicker; the engine needs a richer mix of fuel and air; and colder air in the tyres reduces their pressure and causes more friction.
What is the relationship between a cold car requiring more fuel (+ they forgot the extra fuel to heat the interior of the car) and ‘swarm behavior’ ? It is utter nonsense. How gullible do you have to be rush off and buy Met Office services on the basis of this claptrap?
I don’t have a car, so I am not part of the herd!
Doherty is a numpty and, lucky for him, a school friends of one of the UK’s richest young chef de cuisine.
Me no understand.
“This March was the coldest in fifty years, leading each of us to demand nearly 20% more gas and electricity than usual to heat our houses. And when 63 million of us are doing the same thing at the same time the effects multiply.”
So the increase in gas use is 20% times 63 million, or what?
Swarm? No ‘scold. In fact ‘s effing freezing.
Mr Doherty is a pig farmer who decided that there is more money in main stream media, presenting undemanding soft science programmes. He looks good in slightly worn jeans and check shirt. He does not suck a wheat straw or have odure on his boots. A sort of Jeremy Clarkson or Richard Hammond lite.
Sheep can’t help having wool over their eyes. 😉
