  1. Robert of Ottawa says:

They don’t seem to know which way North is … oh, wait, the ice is in the way!

  2. stewart pid says:

On their facebook page one guy was taunting them to show some pictures of the ice!!

  3. Chewage says:

It is quite spectacular they’ve made us all aware of the dire perils that the Arctic is presenting to mankind.
Hopefully their blisters will heal along with their twisted, irrational and psychotic frame-of-mind:)

  4. Chewage says:

The satellite tracker shows a twisted journey, which makes sense coming from a mentally twisted team:)

  5. Billy Liar says:

Perhaps they were admiring the fine examples of pingos and patterned ground in the Pingo National Landmark. I hope they didn’t think they could row out of the eastern end of that bay!

  6. Richard Lynch says:

Ironically, if they could just get out of the bird sanctuary, there is plenty of clear water north of them (according to NASA Worldview satellite photo for July 9).

  7. Billy Liar says:

Aha. 25mph wind from the NE. Perhaps that explains the route taken by the rowers. There would be moving ice or waves outside their little haven.

I’ve just noticed they’ve updated their blog – they’re sitting out the wind.

Looks like the ice has been melting more rapidly recently. That is, across the entire Arctic, not just in one carefully selected location. Here:

“Average sea ice extent for June 2013 was 11.58 million square kilometers (4.47 million square miles). This was 310,000 square kilometers (120,000 square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 average (the new baseline period) of 11.89 million square kilometers (4.59 million square miles). In comparison, the 1979 to 2000 period that we previously used averaged 12.16 million square kilometers (4.70 million square miles). June 2013 was 760,000 square kilometers (293,000 square miles) above the record low June extent in 2010.”

I see it’s still a bit above the record June low of 2010 (warmest melt year ever).

Don’t forget to look at the latest iteration of the graph we’ve been following.

  9. Andy Oz says:

60 days or less before the arctic minimum and the night returns. And it was gonna take them 40 days with a clear NW passage. Reggie? Where is that blowtorch you promised!

  10. hazze says:

You dont know shit..they made a perfect 8 today..its figure rowing…top scores from the judges..tomorrow its the free program…they use to wear glitterchlotes on that one

    • Andy Oz says:

I agree hazze. We should be much more supportive of their efforts.
Question: if the wind is from the east, how come they are sheltering on the eastern side of the spit of land? That’s the windward side not the lee.

      • Andy Oz says:

And whoever came up with their slogan “Pulling together against Climate Change” really should have thought that one through. In Oz that is a euphemism for …. well kids might be reading this so I’ll leave it at that.

      • Doug says:

Because they don’t have the strength to get to the leeward side of anything.

      • I think I know why. If they intended to moor at the spit, and spend some time onshore, if they moored on the leeward side and their boat broke away from its mooring, they could very quickly lose it, whereas if it breaks away on the windward side, they’ve a better chance of recapturing it.

thanks for that laugh hazze … figure rowing … I love it!
I wonder what they’ll give us tomorrow?

  11. Steve says:

I think this clip explains their direction issues more aptly:

“Closer than ever before: The cameraman got closer to a polar bear family than anyone else has before”

      Ever?

Certainly trying to fake us out.

  12. pinroot says:

    Looks like they’re stuck in a cul-de-sac.

  13. Traitor In Chief says:

Instead of “pulling together” for Climate Twitterpation, they should pull together to get their heads out.

  14. Gamecock says:

“It wasn’t long ago that the Northwest Passage was sole domain of steel-hulled ice-breakers. We hope by making this traverse completely under human power in a row boat, without sail or motor, in a single season we will be able to demonstrate first-hand the profound effects climate change is having on our world.”

“We hope.” They hope for no ice? Wait . . . what? Are they for ice or against it?

“Demonstrate first-hand the profound effects climate change is having on our world.”

What’s the profound effect part? Ice in Queen Maud Gulf? No ice in Queen Maud Gulf? Who even knew there was a Queen Maud Gulf?

    • Traitor In Chief says:

From that first pic, folks should take note that it isn’t comfy being eaten alive by a Polar Bear.

  15. Chewage says:

The size of the bergs showing up look to be quite hefty:)

I wonder if the team brought a few cases of single malt, as it seems they’ll have time to enjoy it:)

  18. Andy DC says:

No smart ass rant from Reggie? That is a very good sign.

  19. Chewage says:

The term “A crushing Defeat”, brings a new image to mind:)
