    Steven:
You are talking about real science. They are discussing Pathological Science. What they are discussing is not Science at all but merely a pseudo label like Accuweather of Political Intelligence. It is closely related to Political Science and Environmental Justice.

  2. phodges says:

The public interest? More like the interests of the corporate/financial elite, for whom the government works. It certainly does not work for “the public”.

And maybe they ought to look at the policies of Hitler, or Stalin…everything they did was “in the public interest.”

The worst part is I will show this to people, and they will say, “So?”

  3. Justa Joe says:

Who decides what the “public interest” is?

Oh… that’s Mikey’s job. – Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Mike

  4. Eric Simpson says:

Promoting their idea of “the public interest” should be their primary goal? And these shysters are not going to hesitate — they will have no compunction at all kind of like sociopaths — about offering up absolute bullshit and lies and crackpot apocalyptic conjectures.
For the doomers climate is just a pretense, an excuse Their idea of the public interest has nothing to do with climate but instead is exemplified in this quote: “A massive campaign must be launched to de-develop the United States… [we] must design a stable, low-consumption economy.” -John Holdren, Obama’s Science Czar, 1973 [way before the agw scare, so they’ve wanted to do this from the start]
Or this: “Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilizations collapse? Isn’t it our responsibility to bring that about?” -Maurice Strong, ex UNEP Director
And this: “We have wished, we ecofreaks, for a disaster… to bomb us into the stone age, where we might live like Indians…” -Stewart Brand, Whole Earth Catalogue

The leftist Senator Tim Wirth said in 1993: “We’ve got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing.” And to achieve their idea of “the right thing” … it is amazing how deception is so openly and explicitly called for:
“It doesn’t matter what is true, it only matters what people believe is true.” -Paul Watson, Greenpeace
“We have to offer up scary scenarios… each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective [dishonest] and being honest [ineffective].” -Stephen Schneider, lead ipcc author, 1989
“I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of .. how dangerous it is.” -Al Gore
“Only sensational exaggeration makes the kind of story that will get politicians’ — and readers’ — attention.” -Monika Kopacz, Atmospheric Scientist
“The only way to get our society to truly change is to frighten people with the possibility of a catastrophe.” -Daniel Botkin, ex Chair of Environmental Studies, UCSB
Hence, the fear mongering Chicken Littles, the broken record prognostications of doom that are starting to sound a lot like constant crying wolf.

Stunning. They aren’t even trying to hide their advocacy. Mann has admitted he is not interested in anything other than advancing his agenda.

  6. omnologos says:

Mann is sadly right, Ward talks like a fascist. Government funded research has always an aim behind it. It ain’t “science” apart when by luck the policy aims include figuring out what actually happens in the real world.

But to claim that as a general rule means slipping into the Ethical State, ie fascism

  7. Richard T. Fowler says:

Omnologos, I think you’re on the right track. The present discussion, started by Mikey, sets up a false dichotomy in which the only two choices supposedly are:

    – A “science” in which the people’s overall welfare or well-being is always advanced with every decision, regardless of the demands of truth; and

    – A “science” in which all truth is always pursued to the maximum possible extent, regardless of the effect on people.

The real science is to be found somewhere in between.
