North pole turned into lake from global warming
Some ice buoy far away from the North Pole has surface melt, just like every July.
This is what the North Pole looked like in 1962.

Go for it!
Should it be “The day when the North Pole became a Polynya”?
Breaking News…..Confirmed Web can is 350 miles away from North Pole with melt pond!!

Read it. Perhaps CBC News should have said “The day when the North Pole buoy moved 350 miles away” 🙂 Now, that is news folks, sheesh!
What are the black and white poles sticking out of the water around the buoy?
They are the line markers for the football game. The have to mark out of bounds somehow. 😉
They are visual signs for ice break-up.
And snow depth
thanks.
Reblogged this on CACA.
These people are pretty desperate huh? How many meters of ice underneath that surface melt? The “lake” (which is only about a foot deep) will refreeze in days.
North Pole webcam No 1 (at 86°N) is in a 20 cm deep melt pond sitting on ice 2.7 meters deep, so the ice is 2.5 meters thick. North Pole webcam No 2 (at 85°N) hasn’t measured the ice thickness since 17 Jun when it was 1.4 meters thick.

A pretty small lake if this is it. More like a small melt pond. http://psc.apl.washington.edu/northpole/NPEO2013/7.jpg
Here I was just packing to go fish that lake! 🙁
Funny, this 1962 photo shows no meltwater when the ship surfaced. Open water only occured later after the ships had broken through and sloshed around creating a bay, not melt.

Homer, that was from a March trip to the pole. The one being discussed here was in August.
Awesome Steven.
Brawndo just proved how rotten the ice was in March, 1962. Look how thin the ice is falling off the sub! That is no more that 0.67 meters thick
Thanks Brawndo, I knew you would come through. 😉
That picture shows the sub coming up through a refrozen lead, which don’t exist in the summer.
“On 17 March 1959, Skate (SSN-578) surfaced at the North Pole to commit the ashes of the famed explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins to the Arctic waste.”
Look how thin that ice is. Thin rotten ice in 1959 at the North Pole.

“The Navy confirmed on 27 March that “In a solemn memorial ceremony conducted by Skate shortly after surfacing, the ashes of Sir Hubert Wilkins were scattered at the North Pole in accordance with his last wishes.””
It’s interesting to note that the storm in May caused large ridges of +5 meter ice around the periphery of this block of ice. So now when the accumulated snow on the top melts (late in the summer) it can’t drain off a side and accumulates in a wide shallow pond near the center because the interior of the block remained flat. What makes this news? The average air temperature for this region in the summer is above 0 C, so the snow is expected to melt every year. Melt ponds are a common feature of the the arctic sea ice. Only the bias errors in the modern algorithms for assessing sea ice area make them interesting.

Is it not amazing that not one cool wave this summer has made the national news or anything related to cold….like S. Hemisphere sea ice growth. All the while every potential & actual heatwave is made out to be hell on earth with continuous, irritating media coverage. Gotta laugh to keep from crying.
