With a wind chill and temps near zero C, there could be some thin ice forming as well. It’s a bona fide crisis of declining crises. The rowers will need to bivouac with some seal pups and hope for no Poley Bear visits.
You really think they’ll need to pull an extra seal or two into their boat’s cabin to spoon up to for the next few days? And if the rowers get attacked by a polar bear while they had a seal pup in their boat and had to kill the bear would they get a ticket for hunting over bait?

The “excess” ice is caused by the “hidden” heat in the deep recesses of the ocean pushing “excessively” cold water to the surface and forcing it to freeze unnaturally. Or something.
