What Are The Rowers Doing?

I can’t think of any scenario which includes continuing the expedition, that is consistent with their track.

Perhaps “Roman Red” has made it’s way to the NW Passage?

    • shazaam says:

Their track is inconsistent with known effects of Roman Red. More likely there is some Vancouver Silver-Green being safely disposed of using a series of small controlled burns. Any other disposal method is potentially unsafe.

  3. miked1947 says:

If they are smart they will head toward that river delta, ahead and to the right, to wait out the coming storm. On Google satellite it looks like a fair place to ride out the storm.

  4. Richard T. Fowler says:

Have you accounted for the fact that in breezy conditions, they have only a limited control over their bearing?

  5. Brad says:

It appears they have found the North South passage.

They be recreatin’ a famous pirate journey. Aaarrrgh!!!

They’re stiking close to shore because maybe one or more of them can’t swim…

    You never know…

  8. Anto says:

Actually, here is their proposed route, so in theory they could still be on course:

2011 North pole rowing team did it but they pulled the boat like dog sled team most tof the way..

  10. They are making good speed at the moment, nearly 5kph. But this is with the winds from directly behind them — and this is about the speed they expected to make on “good” days for most of 24 hours at a time. They’ve been able to keep this up for about half an hour now.

But here, in a few hours, they will face again heading out into the open ocean. So far, the recent ten-mile gap of yesterday is about all they’ve been able to manage of oceangoing.

Hope they brought rope and just maybe Al Gore will rescue them with his Helicopter when the ice refreezes before the end. What’s the Vegas line bet if they make it to the end.

We really need a pool on a rescue date

  13. crosspatch says:

If they don’t get some shelter from this storm, it might be a “recovery date” pool.

  14. Blade says:

Does anybody have a map that shows the actual historical Northwest passages contrasted with the route that these dumbasses are taking?

    • Gamecock says:

      See the link Anto provides.

This is generally the “northwest passage.” The deviation our rowers plan is to cut through Somerset Island to Fort Ross, where the classical route is to go around Prince of Wales Island. The rowers’ small boats would allow them to make the passage to Fort Ross.

  15. Baa Humbug says:

I’m a hard hearted ba$tard so I hope these rentseeking carpetbagging snake oil salesmen freeze solid. Their bodies can be recovered next summer (maybe).

Feed for the bears. They need to live too.

    • rw says:

Yes, it would be lovely to see a surge in Darwin Award candidates inspired by the doctrines of AGW. Maybe even a super-exponential surge? Well, one can always hope.

    • shazaam says:

If they get blown away from shore, they will be at the mercy of the wind. Once it’s too deep to drag, drag, drag, your boat, they will have rely on rowing. And that’s been working out so well so far….

  16. Bill says:

Just keeping their muscles toned? Or maybe they want as large a number as possible for total distance traveled? If they go in circles for awhile they can claim they traveled a distance equal to 34% of the NW passage, even if they only made it 5% of the way.

  17. Olaf Koenders says:

What are the rowers doing? Someone’s fenagled the GPS and won’t give it back. Two are fighting over one oar and another is pouting in a corner. Just set the boat adrift and it’ll manage the passage on its own – if there wasn’t any ice.

Meanwhile, Reggie, sponsored by Brawndo, sponsored by Vallely is desperately spamming on every blog trying to show them in a good light. Maybe he deserves the Medal of Valour 😉
