I use LED lights, which produce a lot of light, and very little heat. Definitely worth the investment. I have never turned on the A/C or heat in Maryland, except for a few days in February, 2012 when I had a house guest.
Disrupting the Borg is expensive and time consuming!

We’d be envious except we like the temperature range of -15 to +100 (F) and live in a fully electric house (wood for emergency; haven’t used in years). But maybe in a few years, if the POTUS has his way, all those in the northern tier of states will move to Maryland.
And if we all would do the same they’ll find alternative ways to raise the price even more.
Curious about the climate of Maryland, I did a Google search on: maryland climate. Number 1 hit was this:
http://climatechange.maryland.gov/
Their “science” page is a howler. This page fares better, with nice pictures of black eyed susans and a pony:

You seem to have relatively cold (i.e. they’d be really cold for me) winters across the state. Do you have good insulation, lots of warm clothing, or a strong constitution? 🙂
I dress for the weather. I used to camp out in -20C weather.
Switch to the old bulbs in the winter, your house would use the heat then.
High wattage ones available as “rough service light bulbs” at your store, or for about $30/dozen online.
Na, Maryland, as with all of the of the east coast from NYC south, generally has relatively mild winters as far as cold temps go. The do get slammed with pretty good snow storms every once in awhile though.
I t really is kind a funny how much it can change in a few hundred miles north. Ft. Drum is a really cold SOB during the dead of the winter.
In Adelaide, our winter maximums rarely dip below about 11 degrees celsius (as far as I can recall, at least), and minimums rarely below 0. I expect Maryland residents would be in shorts and t-shirts in that kind of weather.
My father taught at the University of Adelaide for a while. They said it was pretty hot in the summer there.
I wear shorts down to about -18C. Cycling in long pants isn’t much fun.
Maryland is mostly USDA Zone 7 with average winter minimums 0° to 10°F.

It almost never gets that cold in Eastern Maryland.
Excel on is known for being mainly nuc power company. I would think greens in Maryland would want a different utility.
Don’t want to brag but I used 146 Kw hours last month
I’m 100% electric
Really?
Whereabouts on your person does the power cord plug into?
To warm up the Planet… I used 800kw, drove 5000 miles in my SUV… hell.. I even burned some coal in the backyard … still… still despite my assault on Gaia. .. Arctic Ice grew 84% over 2012..
Oh… add I a 50 mi bike ride today… breathed out lots a CO2 unnecessarily. .. consumed 3000 calories… and released loads of methane..
I tried to use 1,000 kWh last month, just couldn’t afford it. Maybe next month. Energy is king! … Use it or lose it!
I also am 100% electric. Heat, hot water, AC.
Of course, last month I never used the heat or AC. It was September.
And I unplugged the refrigerator 4 months ago.
How do you achieve safe food storage?
I live in a 10 by 22 shack. The summer is rough with a refrigerator because they make so much heat I have to unplug it for the summer. Plugged it back in recently.
I heat with electric and my worst month was January with 1150 kw/hr . But it’s colder here than anywhere. We get around 40 days of sub 0 every winter, and -15 or -20 happens all the time here. Lowest was -35 in Jan, 1994 when everybody set their all-time record low because of Pinatubo.
It’s the least you could do for all your Sin and Abuse of Gaia and the Church of Climate Disruption. .
We lived off the grid 100% ten years.
The refrigerator came on in October and turned off in April. 🙂
The refrigerator on the front porch?
Paul Homewood’s blog has a nice piece on what UK has signed up to in Committee on Climate Change and their Climate Act.
More interesingly there is a link to the Globe International’s pfd that tells what all signature nations have signed up for – including the US.
His link is to http://www.globeinternational.org/pdfviewer the pdf is downloadable from there.
DEPENDS ON WHERE IN MD. YOU ARE. . we live in Mountain Martyland.
winters can be brutal. Come up to garret county and ski sometime. LAST WINTER HAD SIX FOOT SNOW PACK. 12 FEET IN NEARBY WVA.
Love my LED bulbs, especially the ones that change color, but I gotta cook with gas.
I try to save electricity with reason and it seems i am around 70kWh a week, but it is not for heating. For that purpose i have a Ngas boiler and uses ~700m3 a year.
It is for Denmark a bit below normal in electricity and well below for Ngas.
P.S. We are two in the house.
In Denmark the average heating is around 17MWh a year and 4 to 5000kWh electricity.
Ngas is ~9DKr/m3 (~10kWh) and 2.3DKr/kWh electricity.
And the gas station price is low now at 11DKr/liter.
Just to tell you the energy price level in a european country.
I make that about –
Ngas is ~9DKr($1.54)/m3 (~10kWh or 34.121BTU/hr), or $43.60 per 1000 cubic ft.
Electricity 2.3DKr ($0.39)/kWh.
Gas station price is low now at 11DKr ($1.89)/liter or about $7.15/US gallon.
Expensive in Europe ain’t you.
Yes it is expensive relative to US, but somehow you get used to it. Most is taxes that should make you save energy, but i dont think we have saved as much as to compensate for the tax. The worst is that the government is dependent on the revenue, so when you save too much, the taxes goes up.
A funny detail is that diesel is cheaper than gasoline. (~1 DKr les).
