It never occurred to me to question the marital status of your parents.

Heh, I pointed out last month on Skeptical Science that hindcasts don’t necessarily give a lot of confidence in forecasts.

The response was “There is no logical difference between forecasts and hindcasts.”

    Can’t make this stuff up.

    • Gail Combs says:

Skeptical Science just forgot to add, “…as long as you are looking at short term linear trends.”

      • talldave2 says:

They actually tried to justify this claim by the allegedly small number of parameters, which is hilarious since the parameters are themselves tuned to the temperature variable they are hindcasting against, which is to say no one has the slightest idea what the actual values are.

Makes one wonder, if those who create these were lying then, or if they are lying now, or if they were lying both times. I don’t think they have any really good answers. Such ‘adjustments’ after the fact remind me of various incompetent high school science students who had trouble with their lab experiments and would rather just ‘adjust’ their data after the fact to make it look like they had been able to accurately and carefully run their experiment.

I couldn’t find an easy way to see what 2013 looked like on that site. Did it resemble 2012 or 2014, or did it show massive global cooling?

    more “kool” than cool mebbe…………

  6. SMS says:

The earliest history of temperatures in Alice Springs comes from the old Telegraph Historical site some distance outside of Alice Springs and no where near anything that would create UHI. A small Stevenson Screen still sits on the historical site. The current temperature recording site is located at the extreme end of the Alice Springs airport just off the main runway.

I’m thinking that the current temperatures should be given negative corrections and the older temperature history left alone.

    • Jason Calley says:

A thermometer located at the end of a long stretch of pavement might not be a good indicator of temperature — but I bet you could detect wind direction with it!

  7. David Jay says:

In a few years, historic residents of Alice will have to chip ice off of the watering troughs.

  8. philjourdan says:

There’s a new troll in town named Brandon Gates. He contends that the cooling of the past is less lie than the warming of the present.

  9. Anto says:

I think the fault here lies with the Australian BOM’s massively corrupt ACORN-SAT database, rather than Gavin alone.

  10. I am reminded of Hayek’s chapter on “The End of Truth.”

A picture is worth a thousand trillion dollars now a days nicely done Tony ;>)

  12. Mervyn says:

This is precisely what is expected to happen when those agencies responsible for producing such data are not subjected to independent external audits of their data.

If corporate regulatory bodies around the world do not trust boards of directors of corporations to produce and publish financial reports without such reports having first been subjected to independent external audits, why would anyone trust the work of scientists in government agencies that has not been independently verified?
