Growing Coconuts In DC

It has been 33 years since the New York Times predicted that the US would become “truly tropical”

The predicted warming would not be pleasant. The Northern Hemisphere, having less ocean, would experience a greater than average temperature rise. The southern United States and Europe would become truly tropical.

  1. Maybe not coconuts, but certainly other nuts grow well there.

    Dr Goddard,

Did you see the Post article today?

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/for-some-washington-area-gardeners-paradise-lost/2015/04/19/5f323b76-e226-11e4-905f-cc896d379a32_story.html

“For some Washington-area gardeners, paradise lost”

““The last two winters have changed everything for me,” he said, looking glumly at the brown earth of his once lush garden. “I have had these plants for years.”

“Barefoot, 67, is part of an informal alliance of tropical-plant geeks in greater Washington who have spent the past 15 years or more basking in the delights of mild winters.

“We were lulled by several years in a row of mild winters, where the coldest was 13 degrees for a few nights,” said Michael Zajic, who has developed an impressive garden in Nassau, Del., over the past decade. “Last winter here we got down to plus-7 degrees and the winter before to minus-7.” Some of his palm trees died and won’t be replanted. “It’s too painful, expensive, but just plain sad,” he said.

The prospect of climate change, he said, doesn’t mean we’re going to be warm all the time. “It means more variable weather.”

The frozen Potomac didn’t cool the hot air emanating from our liar in chief. While it was still frozen we heard yet more about the “dangerous warming” taking place and drastic actions “required”. Apparently facts are now whatever fearless leader declares they are, (only “deniers” now compare those so called “facts” with what we call reality). But likely, even if he admitted that cooling was now a problem, the same drastic actions would soon be “required” to “fix” that problem.

Speaking of coconuts.: Enjoyed a Coco Loco (top lopped off a coconut, Rum and other stuff poured inside inside, straw added) at the Red Frog Resort, Isla Bastimentos across from Bocas Town, Panama last week. 80 plus degree water and air. White sand beach(s). A few days of paradise. Now back to your regular programming.

  5. Marsh says:

No Coconuts in DC,, maybe a form of Ground nuts ; more the type with legs & rooted in BS.
I also hear, there are “AGW institutions” that have become Nut Farms to boost profitability.

  6. Chewer says:

    Hilarious indeed!
It reminds me of a friend who planted a couple of 7′ apple trees, truly believing in an AGW warmed Alaska. He thought if he wraps them up nicely each fall, he’ll have fresh apples in no time.
Unfortunately with weeks at -40 to -55 degrees F, they did not survive, even with the heavy insulation…

  7. Menicholas says:

I will be happy if I can keep a coconut tree alive here in eastern Lee county for long enough to get any edible fruits.
The only truly tropical area of the continental US (according to Koppen) is the southernmost areas of Florida, along the coast.
How these guys think that a few degrees are all that is needed to make a place with frigid winter “tropical”, means they actually have no clue what climate classification means.
Tropical means every month is above 64 degrees average temperature.

When I was a much younger, Lee County was the poorest county in Florida, and any military that claimed Florida as legal state of residence was issued a Lee County plate to help with the county revenue. I see now that Putnam County is at the bottom of the list, and Lee has moved up to #9, congtrats on that, and good luick with your nuts. 😉

      • Menicholas says:

        LOL, Thank you.

The changes here are nothing short of amazing.
Southwest Florida is unrecognizable compared to 25 years ago.

This was ground zero of the building boom in the 2000-2007 period, and the first place to experience the crash. Building has resumed in Lee and Collier counties again, with every one of the uncompleted communities not only back in business but almost completely built out and sold out.
        Fortunes to be had:

My father was a seventh generation Floridian, and if he had not been on duty, and out of state when both my brother and I were born, there would have been at least an eighth. He grew up in Miami, and his mother worked for Pan Am when they had wicker chairs for seats, and the passengers got wet when it rained during flights.

          Old school Florida.

    • Gail Combs says:

Interesting how they classify most of south to mid eastern USA. (Cfa?)

Cfa: HUMID SUBTROPICAL – EAST COASTS
-AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF WARMEST MONTH AVERAGES OVER 22C/72F
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF COLDEST MONTH IS UNDER 18C/64.4F AND ABOVE -3C/26.6F
      -YEAR AROUND RAINFALL DISTRIBUTION
      http://www.utexas.edu/depts/grg/kimmel/GRG301K/grg301kkoppen.html

ABOVE 26.6F!?! are they out of their squirrely little minds?
In mid North Carolina we had 5 days below that temperature last February, (two days at 20 °F) and 18 days below that temperature this February with the low for the month of 5 °F since upgraded to 7 °F.

That is 300 miles south of DC and they have that SAME climate going all the way to PA and NY!

I think they goofed big time and the climate at least for Virgina and north is actually

      “D” CLIMATES – TEMPERATE

Dfa: HUMID CONTINENTAL HOT SUMMERS W/YEAR AROUND PRECIPITATION
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF COLDEST MONTH IS -3C/26.6F OR BELOW
-AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF WARMEST MONTH IS GREATER THAN 10C/50F

      -RAINFALL EQUALLY SPREAD THROUGHOUT YEAR…

APPLIES TO BOTH Dfa & Dwa:
      -CONTROLLING FACTORS:
LOCATION IN THE LOWER MIDDLE LATITUDES (35 TO 45 DEGREES)
CYCLONIC STORMS ALONG THE POLAR FRONT
      PREVAILING WESTERLIES
      CONTINENTALITY PREVAILS
POLAR ANTICYCLONE IN WINTER (RESULTS IN Dwa CLIMATE TYPE) – HIGH CONTINENTALITY
      -LOCATIONS:
EASTERN AND MIDWESTERN UNITED STATES (ATLANTIC COAST TO THE 100TH MERIDIAN
POLEWARD OF THE “C” CLIMATE TYPE)
      EAST CENTRAL EUROPE
NORTHERN CHINA, MANCHURIA, NORTHERN KOREA, AND HONSHU
      -DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
HOT, OFTEN HUMID SUMMERS; OCCASIONAL WINTER COLD WAVES
      RATHER LARGE ANNUAL TEMPERATURE RANGES
GREAT WEATHER VARIABILITY ON ESPECIALLY YEARLY BASIS
PRECIPITATION 50-115CM/20-45″ ANNUALLY DECREASING INLAND AND POLEWARD
AN APPROXIMATE 140-200 DAY GROWING SEASON
      http://www.utexas.edu/depts/grg/kimmel/GRG301K/grg301kkoppen.html

That makes it black not dark green.

      Does the lying never cease?

      • Menicholas says:

Koppen was a botanist. This is the designations he created a long time ago.

        • Menicholas says:

Koppen had an amazing life. I highly recommend his biography.
His interests and contributions were numerous and wide-ranging, including early efforts to back up and lend support to the work of Milankovich.
His son-in-law was Alfred Wegener, father of the Theory of Continental Drift. I have read accounts which strongly suggest that Koppen himself was the real brain behind Wegeners seminal book, which was published in 1915, although it may well be that the two w’orked synergistically.

        • Gail Combs says:

          Menicholas,

I have quite a bit of respect for Koppen. Are you sure that is his map and not an ‘Updated’ ClimAstrologist version?

HUMID SUBTROPICAL just does not fit Virginia up to New York but TEMPERATE – MIDDLE LATITUDES (35 TO 45 DEGREES) certainly does.
In mid North Carolina I am at Lat 35.6° N and New York, New York is Lat 40.8° N

        • Menicholas says:

You are correct. If you look at the larger scale map, the legend has it listed properly. C is temperate, not subtropical.
I got that second one by just doing a search for Florida, so to get an enlarged version.
I was looking for some older maps, before the updates to 1950-2000.
Have not located them yet, but have not looked very hard either.

The system itself is not very granular. I recall from the first time I studied it that most of the eastern US was Cfa: Temperate (C), with precipitation greater than potential evapotranspiration every month (f), and hot summers (a).

        • Menicholas says:

Sorry, I only noticed after posting that the Florida one said subtropical. There is no such designation in the Koppen system.

  8. I didn’t know DC and Florida still exist??

Weren’t they flooded by rising Sea Level 10 years ago??

Steven… time for another Tide Gage Sea Level post…

  9. emsnews says:

Yes, very little of the US is tropical and no parts of Canada so why do we have so many warmists wailing for another d*nm Ice Age?

    • Gail Combs says:

      Choose one or any combination.
      a) They are dumb
      b) They are brainwashed
      c) They are sadists
      d) They are masochists
