Real Scientists Keep Their Minds Open, And Learn

Freeman Dyson has followed the same path as myself, going from true believer in 1979 to skeptic in 2015.

In 1953, Freeman Dyson told his graduate students at Cornell that Quantum Mechanics is well understood settled science

In 1979, Freeman Dyson was very worried about CO2

In 1986, speaking at the University of Adelaide, Dyson said

“nobody really understands quantum mechanics.”

And in 2015 Dyson said

“CO2 is so beneficial in other ways, it would be crazy to try to reduce it”

The New York Times says Dyson is “infinitely smart”

There is the suspicion that, at age 85, a great scientist of the 20th century is no longer just far out, he is far gone — out of his beautiful mind.  But in the considered opinion of the neurologist Oliver Sacks, Dyson’s friend and fellow English expatriate, this is far from the case. “His mind is still so open and flexible,” Sacks says. Which makes Dyson something far more formidable than just the latest peevish right-wing climate-change denier. Dyson is a scientist whose intelligence is revered by other scientists — William Press, former deputy director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory and now a professor of computer science at the University of Texas, calls him “infinitely smart.”

Freeman Dyson may be able to led the Anerican scientific community out of the wilderness of settled science.

    • Marsh says:

That maybe wishful thinking ; most of the “die-hard” AGW Scientists will likely do just that:: die with their beliefs. We should remember, they’re not Real Scientists,,, they are settled like concrete ; I just wish they were in it !

    • darrylb says:

I know he is a humble man, but I would feel honored to be in the same room as he is in.
Also, I will be using his name and his work and his history as much as I can when
as I finding myself in open debates before various groups.
—-and if anyone here would like to join me, one can always stay at my lake home 🙂

  2. Disillusioned says:

“Dyson has shown the rare ability to learn, and change his views as he gathers more understanding.”

That ability indeed appears to be rare. After I became disillusioned, I thought all I had to do was provide the disillusioning data to others, and they’d immediately see what I saw. And as others saw it too, the AGW house of cards would be collapsing shortly thereafter. (That was Disillusionment Part Deux.)

It is a travesty the ability to learn, and change with more understanding is so rare.

  3. Elaine Supkis says:

Nature is a harsh mistress. The last remaining global warmists are on the West Coast. Everywhere else people are looking into the future with rising fear of another Little (or BIG) Ice Age.

He also has something that I value much higher than intelligence. It is called ethics.

    • Robertv says:

Climate is now in the hands of politics who see it as a tol to achieve their goals. And the one thing you will not find in politics is ethics.

      • gator69 says:

One of my favorite professors in college was my Political Science teacher, Dr Ault. He was a cross between Steve Martin and Thomas Jefferson, and would not let on his political leanings, he was straight down the middle of the road.

My father went back to school at about the age of 50, to earn an additional degree, and had heard me speak highly of Dr Ault, so dad elected to take one of his classes as well. I am happy to report that my dad enjoyed his class almost as much as I did, and we never did figure him out.

Looking back, I believe Dr Ault was a true Libertarian, something with which neither my father nor I had any real experience at the time.

An ethical man walks down the middle of the road, and does not take sides, but follows a straight path to truth.

      • Disillusioned says:

Climate [science] is in the hands of politics.

Climate is in the hands of Papa Sol and Mama Gaia – two of ten biggest climate science deniers in the solar system.

      • Robertv says:

We knew what was coming. Obama announced it in his version of Mein Kampf.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be a world class genius to look at the actual temperature data.and realize that these people are promoting a scam. I had access to the data and the curiosity. Anyone else that has the same will quickly reach the same conclusion.

Reblogged this on CraigM350 and commented:
An excellent article but quite telling that the auto (‘denial’) response is ” There is the suspicion that, at age 85, a great scientist of the 20th century is no longer just far out, he is far gone — out of his beautiful mind.”

Because youth who have yet to experience an ocean cycle know *everything*. Dismiss your seniors at your peril. They have lived you have yet to. The UK in December 2010 was the worst in my lifetime but an old boy said it was nothing like 46’/’47 or ’62/’63.

I recently came across a 1927 local newspaper piece saying how the weather was not ‘in living memory’ was soon put down by someone who was young in the 1880s (notable cold period in the UK).

    Nothing changes.

  7. http://www.steynonline.com/6682/courts-cant-settle-science

“No real scientist asks a court to litigate his science,” Steyn said. [. . .] Real scientists do not look to the District of Columbia Superior Court to decide the merits of their science. Dr. Mann does it because he’s essentially a political activist [. . . .]”

  8. Menicholas says:

” When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do?”

    • gator69 says:

I may burn in Hell for this, but here goes…

      Onward Carbon Soldiers

Onward Carbon soldiers, marching as to war
Serve the cause of Gaia, reason you’ll ignore
Onward then, ye sheeple, lemmings in a throng
’cause alarmists got their science very wrong

Spliced, the loyal bastard, makes his ill gained dough
Forward just like cattle, see Mann’s doomers go, oh..

Onward Carbon soldiers, marching as to war
Serve the cause of Gaia, reason you’ll ignore
Mann and Jones may flourish, oceans rise and warm
And the cause of Gaia will make you conform

      Marching as to war
      (Logic you ignore)
Oh, we’re marching as to war
      (Logic you ignore)

Onward then, ye sheeple , lemmings in a throng
’cause alarmists got their science very wrong
Onward Carbon soldiers, marching as to war
Serve the cause of Gaia, reason you’ll ignore

“I may burn in Hell for this . . .” Really? I fully doubt it. But if so, I guess I’ll see you there. While your lyrical skills are entertaining (if not downright comical), and appreciated, your biblical theology might need a small “adjustment.” Enjoy this devotional from the writings of the Apostle John (verb parsing and short commentary [in brackets] by yours truly). To wit:

John 5:24; “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me HAS [i.e., ‘possesses NOW.’ The Gk. ‘exei’ is the present active indicative of ‘exo,’ to ‘possess or own’] everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but HAS PASSED [i.e., ‘has crossed over never to return.’ The Gk. ‘metabebeken’ is the perfect active indicative (meaning ongoing action that cannot be altered) of ‘metabaino,’ to ‘cross over, find a new address,’ etc.] from death into life.”

1 John 5:13; “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may KNOW [i.e., ‘perceive with absolute certainty,’ (kind of like you know that you awoke this morning, or had breakfast). The Gk. ‘eidate’ is the perfect active subjunctive of ‘oida,’ to ‘know or perceive with certainty’ as if a future event has already taken place] that you have eternal life . . .”

        Blessed assurance!

Permission sought to use your lyrics in our next hymn-sing.

I know God has a sense of humor, just look at a platypus!

A wise man once said if you really want to make God laugh, tell him your plans for the future.

        • darrylb says:

Sometimes I look at myself at age almost 70 and think God has a sense of humor.

        • gator69 says:

Humor has been a God send for me. I earnestly prayed for patience, and boy did I get what I asked for, lessons hourly to this day. You can ask for beauty, fame and fortune, but those are fleeting, and not worthy of His work.

A bit of advice, never pray for humility, or anything for which you are not properly prepared. God does have a sense of humor, and He will use it to reach you.

ps.. do not try this at home unless you know the platypus is tame.
The males have spurs on their rear legs that can deliver a nasty toxin (only in breeding season, iirc).

  9. MrX says:

And yet, the ridiculous part is the Left tries to attack the person instead of the facts. They were insinuating he was “no longer just far out, he is far gone”.

  10. Andy Oz says:

I was like Freeman Dyson. With degrees in science and engineering I believed the climate propaganda of the 1980’s especially as the 1983 El Niño had smashed Australian agriculture. I didn’t change my thoughts until I read State of Fear by Michael Crichton, which I bought by mistake as I thought it was a political thriller. That got me thinking and checking data on the BOM website in the late 2000’s. I uncovered their temperature deceptions which they’ve worked hard at since to cover up. Then I came across Tony’s blog and it all fell into place around 2010. 5 years later the Grand Deception continues. I hope within 2 years the arrests for fraud start and science is taken away from activists and Real Science which has delivered so many wonderful things becomes an honourable profession once more.
