How Much Hotter Is Your Hometown Than When You Were Born? – The New York Times
“Minnesota’s hottest temperature on record is 115°F (46.1°C), set in Beardsley on July 29, 1917, a record that has been officially confirmed by the National Weather Service and the Minnesota DNR. This extreme heat event occurred during a major heat wave, with other parts of the state also seeing record-breaking temperatures that day and around that time”.
let’s try Al Gore’s home state of Tennessee. “The hottest temperature ever recorded in Tennessee was 113°F, occurring in Perryville on August 9, 1930, with another instance also hitting that mark on July 29, 1930, setting the state’s all-time heat record.”
how about New York. “The highest temperature ever recorded in the state of New York is 108°F (42.2°C). This record was set in Troy, New York, on July 22, 1926.”
Tony, a while back you posted some data for the second week of July 1936. I memorized those plus the record temperature set here in Arkansas of 120 degrees on August 10th 1936 in Ozark. I have had several opportunities to use these historical facts on people who believe the notion that the last 20 years have been the hottest in history. Works every time. They have no rebuttal since they have never experienced hot temperatures like that in their lifetime. It makes me glad I majored in history in college.
The highest temperature ever recorded in Washington D.C. was 106 °F which occurred on July 20, 1930.
The hottest temperature ever recorded in Alaska is 100°F (38°C), set in Fort Yukon on June 27, 1915
The highest temperature ever recorded in Hawaii is 100°F (38°C), which occurred on April 27, 1931, in P?hala on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Florida’s highest recorded temperature is 109°F (43°C), set on June 29, 1931, in Monticello. take note that all these record high temperatures occurred in different years more than 75 years ago… except one. point is it wasn’t just one heat wave.
here’s an interesting one. if you Google what’s the record high in Texas it tells you 120° in 1994. dig a little further and you find out no, the record was set in the 1930s and tied in 1994. “The old (and current) all-time high temperature record for Texas is 120°F (49°C), first set in Seymour on August 12, 1936, and later tied in Monahans on June 28, 1994”,
I bet the old record was from a weather station in a field in the middle of nowhere and the new record was in a city or airport next to a busy highway or jet runway.
Which tells people who have common sense, that temperature, weather, etc. are all cyclical.
Did anyone else see this? Google has a story on some descendants of parents that enjoyed their North Carolina beach home in the ’50s…. but was wiped out by “sea level rise caused by man-made global warming”.. in the 1960s. the story says sea level rose two inches… and that destroyed the property. really? I’m just thinking maybe what destroyed the property is building a vacation home on a tidal sandbar. I found this on the net… here’s 7 forts built by the French over the last 500 years that are still standing and did not get wiped out by an alleged sea level rise, man-made or otherwise. https://www.amusingplanet.com/2014/02/7-magnificent-forts-on-french-coast.html?m=1. FYI recall the Indian Ocean tsunami of 20 some years ago. the forts built by the French in India survived because they thought a good practice was to build your fort at least 25 ft above sea level. FYI again…. I live in South Central Minnesota and the snow cover is adequate, the snowmobiles are running… more snow in the forecast. we did have a warm fall but that’s history. gosh I wonder what’s more deadly for my family. Below zero temperature or above zero temperature? the left wing propagandists… so-called news …would tell you above warm temps are more detrimental to our future health and existence…… and freezing your ass off isn’t. ya…right
Beachfront property wiped out by 2 inches of sea level rise? Any storm, even a mild one, could do that. Also, wouldn’t you think that someone building beachfront property would know to check the tide gage records and would see that there has been a steady sea-level rise over the last 100 years? I also noticed, while I was in Texas, that beachfront property was always built on piling to be ten or so feet above the beach. Are Texans smarter than Carolinians?
Brrr! I hate being cold!
I am in Texas and my home is all electric. My largest winter heating bills always exceed my largest summer cooling expenses. Unless we are entertaining (rare) we keep the thermostat at 77 in summer and usually 68-70 in winter. I grew up down here without a/c – only fans and “swamp boxes” and I must acknowledge that I get a bit miffed when I hear Northerners say we couldn’t survive down here without a/c – but we did. I don’t believe Northerners would last long up there without heat. I’d rather be hot and sweaty than freezing.
I check my local weather almanac frequently and most extreme daily temperatures (highs and lows) were set during the last Century – many before 1950.
I would change “many” to most…. unless they’re weather stations that have only been there since 1960. currently snowing like the Dickens here in central Minnesota. FYI where I live heating bills in the winter are much much higher than cooling bills in the summer.
I lived in the desert just north of El Paso, and we had the swamp boxes, i.e. evaporative cooling. With relative humidity at about 6%, it worked just fine, except for the occasional algae, which was immediately killed by some chemicals. Surprisingly, we have lived to be 78, with no major cancer problems. Also, we grew up about 40 miles from the White Sands atomic test site, and still no odd ball cancers, us or any of our neighbors. Gottes willen, was hat gehabt? Vielleicht alles von dem Jounalist ist Kuhscheisse!
You grew up with only fans?
You may have been ahead of time but your parents should have limited your internet access.
No, we had evaporative cooling, water dripping over a straw mesh and a fan blowing air through it. My grandparents, who lived on the plains of Oklahoma, had only fans.
As far as Internet, my parents didn’t know what I was doing except while they went food shopping in El Paso, they left me at the public library, where I checked out 10 to 14 books to take home for two weeks.
I thought I’d answered Czechchenlist,
but it seems you’ve had a similar Only Fans past.
Anyway ,10 – 14 books per 2 weeks,
That’s 3000-3600 per decade.
You must have aquired a tremendous amount of knowledge.( and a small library of forgotten-to-return books)
Catch this… give this a look. how stupid are the global warming propagandists? apparently more stupid than you ever thought. here’s another internet story on sea level rise and it says that sea levels have risen almost a foot since 1880. really??? anybody that knows anything on this subject knows that 1880 is about the end of the little ice age. so apparently sea level rise occurred far before we had coal-fired electric producing power plants and gasoline (fossil fuel) powered cars. “Sea levels have risen around the globe by an average of eight to nine inches since 1880, but island and coastal communities are especially vulnerable to the threats posed by encroaching waters.”. FYI I’m in South Central Minnesota and at a sea level about 1,000 ft above… so I’m going to sleep well tonight… just saying
update on the prediction that snow would be a thing of the past. it’s currently snowing in 26 States. no doubt if we hadn’t burned all that coal it would be currently snowing in 27 States. lol
we are doomed.. despite its early December and I literally have one foot of snow on the ground in my front yard in South Central Minnesota… we are doomed. a month ago a Danish engineer published a study that showed sea level has not changed in 40 years and yet we’re still doomed. we are doomed. oops …I mean if prejections prove to be true….. we are doomed. the only hope is to send more of our tax dollars to Washington DC and maybe…. maybe we can avert catastrophe. https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/plants/amazon-rainforest-is-transitioning-to-a-hypertropical-climate-and-trees-wont-survive-that-for-long
144 a.m…. currently where I live in South Central Minnesota… the temp is 10 below zero without any wind. just sayin…. just sayin. oh yeah ..it’s global warming
thank God for all that heat trapping CO2. it is currently three below zero in St Cloud Minnesota at 3:09 p.m.. that ties the record low high for December 13th. just think how cold it would be if we didn’t have all that heat trapping CO2! it might have been 20 below! lol
