On this blog, Zeke said two days ago that NOAA always assumes that the current measured temperatures are correct, and that the older data gets adjusted downwards relative to the present. So the Y-offset of the adjustments isn’t important.
On WUWT yesterday he was bragging that the adjustments for the current year are very small.
You can’t make this stuff up.
It depends on your definition of “small”. 😉
The question arises – how can they adjust the past since it is over and retakes are not allowed. The Delorean is out of Plutonium and their lousy models cannot predict a lightening strike.
If one assumes that the current temperatures are always correct, then how can you justify adjust the older temperatures? I mean, they were current (and therefore correct!) back in 19whatever when they were written down, right? How can they have been correct when they were recorded, but somehow not correct when we read them years later?
Six’s registering thermometer was invented by James Six in 1782. It has been in use for over two hundred years.
Do you think NO ONE figured out how to use it by 1800? Do you think NO ONE wrote out instructions on how to use it? (Not that it is necessary)
Do you think people who lived without central heating and NO A/C didn’t notice when the coolest part of the day was and the hottest and reset the thermometer accordingly?
We are so used to not thinking for ourselves and expecting someone else to spell out in simple instructions, exactly what we should do every step of our lives, we forget our ancestors could easily out think most of the population due to better education and less government interference in their lives.
Central England has a continuous temperature record going back to the 1650’s. There has been about 1 degree of warming since then. We are all going to die!

Contestant: ” I’ll take “Inflated Egos” for 200 dollars Alex ”
Alex: ” Name a BEST researcher who believes their own press ”
Contestant: ” Hmmm gosh, there are several … who is Zeke Hausfeather? ”
Ding! Ding!
.
I remember a comment Zeke made on the Blackboard a few weeks ago where he said something to the effect that no more adjustments need to be made because they are doing it correctly now. And I was all “Yeah, right”. 😉 I’ll see if I can find it this weekend.

It’s amazing how people can fool themselves when their egos are in the way.
If I could just get a flux capacitor we could go back and check for ourselves

I just put the following comment up for Zeke over at Lucia’s blog. Figured it fit here also. Cut the first paragraph.

I picked a USHCN station for an area I have been to which is sort of isolated. 150 south of Miami. That is Key West. I was stationed a couple miles north on Boca Chica Key at the Naval Air Station in the 1960s while I was in the USAF. Copying Cuban Morse Code communications. Mostly repetitively dull stuff. Here is what I found in the GHCN database about that particular station.
I looked at the GHCN raw data. Key West has 142 years without a single missing data-point. Looked at the GHCN adjusted data and found as of their June 20th database they have removed 14 entire years. Additionally, the records they do have look like swiss cheese and most of them have been ‘adjusted’. Had a GHCN adjusted data set from March 2013. Checked that and found it had only lost 9 entire years of data. The cheese wasn’t quite as holely, but had very different adjustments.
The whole island is only about 5 sq miles. How can they claim with a straight-face to be able to accurately adjust Key West by using other nearby stations? There aren’t any places close by which have a similar climate. Everglades appears the closest and that is a sad record in a different climate. Anything they did come up with, they’d all have broken, shorter, and less reliable records. These people at NOAA/NASA are just pissin’ down our leg and telling us it is raining. All the while drawing a nice little earner of a paycheck and working their way to retirement.
+ Well said.

At this stage Goddard should get/keep certified/attorneyed copies of all the data. You can be sure USCHN, NOAA, GISS and NDCD are going to start REMOVING ALL the data/sites soon. You will most likely be approached by some high fallutin’ lawyers for a PEOPLE V Government massive lawsuit. My take on it.
Yes, the Good Old Memory Hole.
It constantly eats data like a black hole eats light.
It even eats IRS e-mails.
