Of all the projected impacts of climate change, the scariest one in a world is the effect warming could have on our ability to feed ourselves.
global warming is likely to alter the climate at a rate faster than anything we’ve experienced in recorded history

Whatever the cause of the cooling trend, its effects could be extremely serious, if not catastrophic.
University of Toronto Climatologist Kenneth Hare, a former president of the Royal Meteorological Society, believes that the continuing drought and the recent failure of the Russian harvest gave the world a grim premonition of what might happen. Warns Hare: “I don’t believe that the world’s present population is sustainable if there are more than three years like 1972 in a row.”

Disco started in ’72, Oh no we are all doomed.

I think I’ll just average the two articles and say the climate will be nice, no catastrophes this side of the next ice age.
Of course that would obviate any need for the two articles, which is Time’s problem – they’d have nothing sufficiently catastrophic to write about then.
Steven,
Thanks for another fine example of how our understanding of the environment changes over time. Keep up the good work.
Kind Regards
Back in ’74 I think Hare jumped the gun. boom booom
The problem with all of these guys, is that they see a trend in a few years of weather.
A few cold years, and they see an ice age.
A few warm years and they see global warming.
A few warm winters, and snow is rare and a thing of the past.
That alone should tell any intelligent person that they don’t know what they are talking about.
Bottom line, they are nothing more than glorified weathermen.
Time is still in circulation? Why? It is a hoot to note though. After an entire generation of nothing but predictions of doom an gloom and disasters………….nothing’s happened. We’re all still here. I guess some people never tire of making fools of themselves.
Time Magazine just wants to sell. Because they are not a scientific publication, they don’t need to be right, they just need to shock and awe so they sell copies. The best way to sell is to create mass hysteria. That’s what journalism is these days, just putting fear into the minds of others.
Here are some interesting links that cover past climate scares. Climate change fear has been with us for some time now. So no change there. ;>)
