“Arctic sea ice headed for another record melt: NSIDC scientists”

Top scientist says the Arctic is doomed!

Last month saw the second lowest Arctic ice cover since 1979, continuing the downward trend of summer ice cover, says the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado.

Ice extent shrank in June at an average rate of 80,800 square kilometres per day, about 50 per cent faster than the average drop recorded from June 1979 to 2000.

At this rate, the Arctic Ocean may be ice free in summer by 2030, said Mark Serreze, director of the NSIDC, calling the decline of the extent of the sea ice and its loss of thickness “an overall downward spiral.”

Mark Serreze? Is that Mark “Arctic-Ice-Death-Spiral” Serreze?

  2. Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

Is Mark the one on the left or is that Walt?

  3. Sleepalot says:

I guess my question is “why does Mark Serreze think he’s a suitable person to hold the office
    of director of the NSIDC?”

  4. Dave N says:

Looks like the Gore Effect has struck Serreze. He makes another death spiral statement, and the melt makes a left-hand turn.

Around August 11th might be an interesting time..

One would think ‘scientists’ would pay attention to graphs. But I shouldn’t presume.

One would think “Climate” “scientists” might ask things like

      1. why does one Earth polar circle have nine times the ice of the other, is on average 30-60 degrees colder than the other, and calves 9 times the ice into the oceans (some 40 times the H2O of the Mississippi River)?
      2. Why didn’t we get an explanation for the record large Antarctic sea ice extent in 2010, instead of censorship and whining about Arctic Sea Ice only?

      • Grumpy Grampy ;) says:

Global is only the Northern Hemisphere except when a warming event occurs in the Southern Hemisphere and only in NH summer unless the Winter temperature can be shown to be warmer than average.
Global only covers extreme weather conditions that can be blamed on warming.
Antarctica is only a small portion of the globe, Even Washington DC is a better representation of global conditions when they can show a record warmth. 😉

  6. LaDairis says:

Why did Antarctic Sea Ice set another all time record high for extent just last year if it is “global “warming,” not “warming right over active undersea volcanoes?”
