Aug 28 (Reuters) – New York power utility Consolidated Edison (ED.N) said on Sunday it hasn’t made a final decision on whether to cut power to Lower Manhattan due to storm surges, but flooding in the area appeared less severe than some forecasters had expected.

It looks like a rain to me! And not even a storm at that. But then I used to live in an area that tended to have flash flooding frequently!
Hindsight is a beautiful thing. May I be the first to say we dodged a bullet on this one, and congratulations to you, Dr. Goddard, for you prescience in calling this one the bogus sham it was.
And my sympathies to those families who are off to bury their dead.

German news site Spiegel Online managed to churn out a ridiculous piece in their science section where the author argues that New York was spared only because Irene touched it with her “softer left side”.

Obviously Irene would have had to make landfall quite a way down the coast and go west for several hundred miles to offer her right side to NY City – at which point she’d have been much weaker. Perhaps she was expected to swing around Iceland and come back down the east coast to cause devastation more pleasing to the writer.
Yes under global warming everything would be worse than before except when it is not.
