  1. OMG, it’s July 12th and the whole Northwest Passage isn’t open already.
    Obsess much?

  2. Pathway says:

So far to go and so little time to get there.

  3. Andy Oz says:

Only about 40 more days above zero Celsius in the arctic this summer. Then the ice begins to return. Doesn’t leave a lot of time to row the Passage. Valiant attempt, though. Commendable. Might need a new sponsor next year. I hear Enron is making a comeback into alternative energy generated from bovine biomass. Ethical bunch of guys. Trustworthy.

  4. Traitor In Chief says:

Why does the aircraft have to follow the water?

  5. Streetcred says:

    Reggie … you’re a fugwit man !

  6. Richard Lynch says:

Meanwhile, the rowers are on the move again. Although they didn’t go very far.

  7. SMS says:

Getting through the NW passage has been done before. The Canadian Navy in the 40’s, Amundsen in the teens and McClure almost made it in the 1850’s. But they probably were making their trips at the apex of the PDO. The PDO has been on it’s negative side for several years now; making trips through the NW passage more difficult.

Does Reggie not know of the PDO?

The real test of AGW will come when the PDO hits it’s nadir in about 25 years. By then, others will be telling us we are headed into another ice age. And asking for money. Telling us we have insulted Gaia. Stifling debate. Telling us how we should live our lives. Telling us we have to create as much CO2 as we can.

People like Reggie will be telling us we are sinners in his world and the only redemption comes in paying more in taxes. Reggies’ is not a real world, by the way. Just a belief system based on flawed science and a strong belief in what others shout down to him from their pulpit.

  8. Bob Koss says:

Looks like they only spent about 1.5 hours rowing. Last plot was 5 hours ago. These guys have to be very discouraged. Reality is a bitch.

Forecast through 10 am Tuk time. Winds 5-7 mph, temperature mid-upper 30s, no precipitation is sight.

  9. Crashex says:

Well, that was a terrible start to their adventure. Now that they are at least rowing, they are moving at about 2.75 KM/hr. That puts their first real test against the ice about 2-3 days away (140-240 KM) which they can enjoy for a few days.

How on long till they can get by the point at Baille Islands? That’s where they’ll find the +50% ice. Can they find a shortcut through the peninsula?

They aren’t mathematically eliminated, but that had to be a discouraging start.

  10. Sean Peake says:

I tried to warn these guys yesterday on their FB page that they have about 30 days left to get it done and GTFO. Summer turns into Fall around the 2nd week of August and Fall can last just a couple of days before winter gales start. My rule of thumb when paddling rivers above the circle was get clear by August 20 Being on the exposed arctic coast is no place to be when the season changes and hurricane force wind and blizzards start, especially near an estuary at low tide. You will never reach shore. I am disheartened by their seeming arrogance about this. They are in a very dangerous place and the presence of ice makes it more so. Simpson, Dease, Rae, Steffanson, Back and Richardson et al were cautious and but were still at great risk. Franklin was not.

  11. Gamecock says:

Please double check the route, Steve. My understanding is they plan to take the Bellot Strait to Fort Ross. You show them going all the way up Peel Sound.

On the other hand, it doesn’t really matter. They aren’t going to reach there this year. The expedition to dramatize the lack of ice is stopped by massive ice. You couldn’t make this up.

  12. BC says:

Reggie is the “Baghdad Bob” of the Arctic. 😀

“There IS no ice! Even if there WAS ice, which, I can assure you, there is NOT, our blow torch of Allah would make it melt in their stomachs!”

  13. margaret berger says:

How come? In this day and age when we all carry cameras that can take stills and videos there aren’t more pictures of this expedition? Why haven’t we seen photos of the driftwood that blocked their path? Why aren’t we seeing photos of the land as they dock? Why aren’t they posting shots of open water? Every inch of this adventure should be recorded and instantly made available to the public because we can do that now. Most of the shots are tight close ups. Hummmmmm.
