It so happens that racism is found both North and South, and more among blacks against whites than the reverse. Still, in my experience (and I have lived in the North and in the South of the US) I saw more racism of white against black when I lived in the North.
I used to try to reason with Northerners when they told me that the South was so racist. I don’t even try any more. I don’t want them to approve of the South; they might end up moving here. I would rather they stay away. I tell them “Yeah, it is horrible! Living in the South sucks! Everyone is ignorant, the weather is too hot and as for culture or entertainment — well, good luck finding either! If you are smart, you’ll stay up North! Moving to the South is like moving to a prison!”
When a black hockey player for the Washington Capitals a couple of years ago scored the winning goal in a playoff series, the Boston Bruin fans (not just a few) hurled some of the most vile racial epithets at him that you could ever imagine. Yes, racism is alive and well in some of our most cultured northern cities.

Lol. Having fluoride in the tap water never made sense to me. It likely has more to do with vitamin D deficiency anyway.
Fluoride treatment of the teeth, also standardly done with a much higher concentration mouthwash in the dentist’s office, produces CaF2, calcium difluoride, which is very insoluble, making the surface more resistant to bacterial activity and strengthening tooth structure. The drinking water in Perth, Australia has a naturally high fluoride content and the people there have virtually no cavities, but the downside is that it can make their teeth look mottled. Orthodontists do fine there, but dentists starve.

That commenter obviously has no idea the demographics of Miami, which has large populations of Hispanics and Jews.
Also, except for the panhandle, Florida is not really considered Deep South, that is a bit north of here. I am a native Floridian, which is a rarity; the state is truly a melting pot, most people are from somewhere else. All those climate refugees seem to come here.
I guess she hasn’t been to Houston. When I attended high school, you can’t tell which race dominates. I was the only white player on first defensive football team. The only white person that even bothered to fight me was my brother. Plenty blacks and Hispanics tried to fight me for no reason.
The only place I ever saw this was Neighborhoods in NYC where I brew up. Half my life in the south. Much more accepting than the North ever was. This comment is so OTT, I wonder if this person actually lives in the South. However, I’m sure it resonates well in the Guardian echo-chamber. In fact, it sounds like he’s sucking up to his confreres, giving them the message he thinks they want to hear.
Reading this, one would think that the Katrina refugees ended up in northern states. That isn’t my recollection.
Hopefully, the vicious insincerity reflected in this comment will at some point redound on the people that lap up this kind of nonsense.
Maybe the most important point is that this comment has exactly the same kind of unreality as rants about catastrophic global warming.
